Goodison Park - Premier League

Everton kick off 2018 with a visit of Manchester United, with the Toffees hopeful of maintaining their strong start under Sam Allardyce.

Past Meetings

Jose Mourinho's United won 4-0 earlier this season against Everton at Old Trafford, in one of the final games of Ronald Koeman's tenure as Everton manager. The 2-16-17 campaign saw two Premier League draws between them

Everton's last win over United came back in 2015, via a 3-0 win at Goodison Park.

Team News

Mourinho will have a number of players missing through injury, but he is boosted by the return to fitness of both Matteo Darmian and Anthony Martial.

However Chris Smalling, Antonio Valencia, Marouane Fellaini, Eric Bailly and Michael Carrick are all still out of action.

Wayne Rooney has recovered from a flu virus and should be fit to start against his former team, but midfielder Idrissa Gueye misses out with a hamstring injury. Leighton Baines, Seamus Coleman, Ramiro Funes Mori, are all still out, but Yannick Bolasie, James McCarthy and Ross Barkley are back in contention.

Everton v Manchester United Preview and Predictions

Everton have improved significantly under Allardyce, and the Merseyside club are unbeaten in all four of his home games as boss. Their turnaround is based on a stronger defensive structure, and an ability to nullify opponents that play with pace.

United's form away from Old Trafford has been a mixed bag recently, winning at West Brom - before losing at Bristol City in the EFL Cup and drawing with Leicester City in the Premier League.

Everton's improving form an United's lack of killer instinct on the road makes this game a difficult one to call, and a draw - priced at 14/5 - looks to be a good shout.

Neither side have been banging in the goals in recent weeks, with United scoring five goals in their last three away games and Everton conceding just one goal in their last three at Goodison Park.

With that in mind a under 2.5 goals bet - priced at 3/4 - looks a good option on this game.

Recommended Bets

A 1-1 draw at 7/1

Everton look revitalised under Allardyce, and they will give United a tough examination on New Years' Day - boosted by their shut out of Chelsea at Goodison Park over the festive period. United still look at little hit and miss away from home this season, and a draw would be a positive result for both sides.

Wayne Rooney to score anytime at 5/2

Rooney should be passed fit for this game, up against the club where he is still their all time top goal scorer, and he will want to make an impact after a poor showing in the 4-0 defeat earlier this season. He has also netted 10 Premier League goals for Everton so far this season, leading their goal charts in the process.
