St. James’ Park - Premier League

Newcastle mark their return to the Premier League with the identical fixture with which they left it, against Tottenham Hotspur. The final match of 2015-16 saw the Magpies stun Spurs by winning 5-1 but any win for the home side this time round would be equally as welcome on Tyneside.

Past Meetings

Just over a year ago the already relegated Magpies shocked Spurs by trouncing them 5-1. Newcastle actually did the double over high-flying Tottenham that season but Spurs had won the previous three league meetings by an aggregate of 10-1 and overall have won eight more times than Newcastle.

Team News

Still looking for a breakthrough in the transfer market Spurs have sold right-back Kyle Walker for big money to Manchester City, comfortable in the knowledge that they have Kieran Trippier for that position… so it was almost inevitable that Trippier would hobble out of Spurs’ final warm-up game on crutched and in a protective book. He is a doubt for the big kick off but could yet play.

Similarly Newcastle’s major doubt is also optimistic about being ready for the opening fixture. Last season’s top scorer Dwight Gayle sat out Newcastle’s final two friendlies as he nursed a hamstring injury which has restricted him all year. While newly promoted Newcastle have made modest signings they are yet to bring in the fire-power they need.

Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur Preview and Predictions

Away form will be crucial if Spurs are to maintain or improve upon their top three places from the last two seasons. Playing their home games this season at Wembley does not bode well for a team who struggled there in the Champions League last season and witnessed West Ham’s problems in acclimatising to their big new environment.

Consequently, kicking off with a win at a team who were playing Championship football last season is essential for the Londoners who are 4/6 to win with a price of 16/5 if you take Tottenham to win after being held in the first half.

Having lifted the Championship under the wily Rafa Benitez the home side will be tough opposition as they will be determined to start positively. Benitez will have them well drilled and determined but if they are missing Gayle they may struggle for penetration.

So far Spurs have fought off interest in their big names and Harry Kane and Deli Alli might simply have too much class for a side who found the top flight too much for them last time around. Newcastle are 17/4 to win on their own soil with 11/4 offered if you fancy the fixture to end all square.

Recommended bets

Spurs to win after being level at half time at 16/5

Newly promoted Newcastle’s enthusiasm and energy could see them hold super Spurs early on but class could tell as the Tynesiders tire.

Newcastle to win at 17/4

Newcastle will do well to topple Tottenham but sometimes you get strange results on the first day and last year’s runners’ up could lose at the home of the Championship winners.
