St.Mary's Stadium - Premier League

Southampton host Swansea on the opening day of the Premier League season, in Mauricio Pellegrino's first competitive game as Saints boss.

Past Meetings

Southampton have a slight edge in their recent meetings with the Welsh side, winning three out of their last four meetings. However the last meeting between them ended in a 2-1 Swansea win in January, thanks to goals from Alfie Mawson and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Team News

Southampton team captain Virgil van Dijk is set to miss their Saints opening game, with the defender having sat out much of pre-season with a foot injury amid a transfer wrangle involving Liverpool.

Swansea are facing injury problems at the other end of the pitch, with a shortage of fit strikers available. On loan Chelsea youngster Tammy Abraham faces a late fitness test on a groin injury, and Spanish international Fernando Llorente out until later this month with a broken arm.

Ki Sung-yeung is out until September with a knee injury, as is fellow midfielder Nathan Dyer who is out with an achilles problem.

Southampton v Swansea City Preview and Predictions

Southampton ended their pre-season campaign on a high with a 2-0 win over La Liga side Sevilla, however they were defeated by Bundesliga outfit FC Augsburg this summer.

Swansea also ended their pre-season in good form, with back-to-back wins over Birmingham City and Sampdoria ahead of the trip to Southampton.

Home advantage could give Southampton a edge in this game, as well as the interest surrounding Pellegrino's first game, and they are priced at 4/7 to pick up all three points.

Despite being the underdogs, Swansea do have plenty of firepower at their disposal in Abraham (if fit), Leroy Fer and Sigurdsson, and a BTTS bet, priced at 10/11 looks a good option.

Recommended Bets

Southampton to win 2-1 at 8/1

This could well be a tight encounter between two sides looking to secure a top half finish this season, but the hosts should have just enough to secure a win. Swansea narrowly avoided relegation towards the end of 2016-17, saved by their form in spring, and they will be hoping to build on that in the beginning of this season.

Manolo Gabbiadini to score first at 9/2

The Italian striker ended the 2016-17 campaign in good form for the south coast club, scoring six goals in all competitions following his in January from Serie A side Napoli. He has continued that form into pre-season, netting twice during their preparations.
