Chelsea v Tottenham Predictions, Betting Tips & Previews

Tottenham's Harry Kane

Saturday 22 April – Wembley Stadium – FA Cup

The top two teams in the Premier League go to battle for a place in the FA Cup Final, as Chelsea face Tottenham at Wembley Stadium. Spurs closed the gap to Antonio Conte’s men to just four points last weekend, giving even more edge to this semi.

Past Meetings

Dele Alli scored twice in Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Chelsea in January, while the Blues won this season’s reverse fixture 2-1. A 5-3 win for Spurs two years ago is the only other time they’ve beaten Chelsea in the last 16 meetings. Chelsea ran out 5-1 winners the last time the sides met in the FA Cup in 2012.

Team News

Thibaut Courtois was a late withdrawal before Chelsea’s loss against Manchester United on Saturday, but is expected to return. The goalkeeper apparently injured his ankle shooting a basketball promo, and you can only imagine what Conte thought of that. Marcos Alonso also pulled out of the Old Trafford clash through illness, but should be okay for Wembley.

Things are looking good for Mauricio Pochettino after Harry Kane’s successful return from his ankle injury. Victor Wanyama returned at the weekend too, leaving the manager with a decision to make over Eric Dier. The Englishman has been in good form so dropping him would be harsh, but Spurs could go three at the back to accommodate him.

Chelsea v Tottenham Preview and Predictions

With Chelsea losing two of their last four games and Tottenham setting a club record with seven straight wins, the Premier League title race is back on. This gives the FA Cup clash added spice, as Spurs would get a huge psychological boost with a victory. It also means the bookmakers can’t separate the two teams in the betting.

Pochettino must decide whether to match up Chelsea’s formation with a three man defence of his own. They did just that to great effect in the win over the Blues earlier this season. The Spurs boss will have seen Jose Mourinho play two up front for Manchester United against the Premier League leaders at the weekend though. This could tempt him to push Dele Alli or Son Heung-min further up as Spurs aim to win their first trophy since the 2008 League Cup.

Chelsea still hold all the aces when it comes to the league run-in. This game will be a straight shootout to reach the FA Cup Final though, where Conte could seal a remarkable Double in his first season in English football. With both teams at 7/4 for the win, this one is too close to call. Of course, you could back the draw after 90 minutes, which is priced at 9/4.

Recommended Bets

Both teams to score at 8/9

Costa, Hazard, Pedro, Kane, Alli, Son…with so much firepower on show it’s hard to see either side failing to find the net.

Kane or Costa to score in their team’s win at 3/1 or 11/4

Despite both teams having strong supporting casts, Kane and Costa are the spearheads of their respective sides. It’s 3/1 for Kane to score in a Spurs win, while Costa scoring as Chelsea secure victory is 11/4.
