Liverpool v Middlesbrough Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews

Daniel Sturridge Liverpool

Sunday 21 May – Anfield – Premier League

Liverpool host Middlesbrough at Anfield on the final day of the Premier League season, with Jurgen Klopp’s side playing for Champions League qualification. The home side need a win against already-relegated Boro to guarantee a top four finish.

Past Meetings

These two teams haven’t played each other many times recently, thanks to Middlesbrough’s league status. Liverpool ran out 3-0 winners at the Riverside earlier this season, courtesy of an Adam Lallana brace and a strike from Divock Origi. Boro took the Merseysiders to penalties in the League Cup at Anfield in 2014, which might give them some hope.

Team News

Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino faces a late fitness test for this one. If the Brazilian doesn’t make it Daniel Sturridge could get another chance up front, after impressing in the 4-0 win at West Ham. Philippe Coutinho was also magnificent that day, and the Reds hope this won’t be his last appearance for the club.

Gaston Ramirez’ future has also been questioned in the face of Middlesbrough’s relegation. The Uruguayan hasn’t featured since his silly sending off against Bournemouth last month, after picking up a reported thigh injury. He could return to the team for this final game, along with defender Daniel Ayala after an ankle problem.

Liverpool v Middlesbrough Preview and Predictions

While the visitors have been consigned to the Championship for some time now, Liverpool have it all to play for. The Reds are one win away from securing Champions League football, and bringing those famous European nights back to Anfield. Middlesbrough’s previously mean defence has become leaky of late, making the home side strong favourites in the betting.

It’d be a fantastic achievement for Klopp to finish in the top four in his first full season in charge, especially considering the size of the clubs below them. The football’s been brilliant to watch at times this season, but all Liverpool need is the three points on Sunday. They’ve struggled against lesser teams at times, but go into this one at 2/11 to get the win.

The bookmakers don’t hold out much hope for Middlesbrough. Steve Agnew’s side start at a huge 22/1 to record a shock win, and surely decimate Liverpool’s season. With just one Premier League win since before Christmas though, this isn’t likely to happen. However, Boro can be a stubborn team to play against when they want to be, making the draw better value perhaps at 7/1.
