Sunday 21 May – St Mary’s Stadium – Premier League
There’s plenty still left to play for at St Mary’s on the final day of the Premier League season, as Southampton host Stoke City. The Saints are looking to secure an eighth place finish, while the visitors could end up as high as 11th or as low as 16th.
The two sides played out a goalless draw earlier this season at the bet365 Stadium. In the last campaign, both sides won away from home in this fixture. An early goal from Bojan secured the three points for Stoke at St Mary’s, while Graziano Pelle scored a brace in the reverse game.
Claude Puel will be happy to have Charlie Austin back after his long injury layoff. The English striker could start this one after missing over five months of action due to shoulder surgery. Virgil van Dijk continues to miss out with a foot injury, and it remains to see if the defender will feature for the Saints again.
For Stoke, Marko Arnautovic’s season appears to be over after the forward’s arm was spotted in a cast this week. The Austrian suffered the injury in the defeat against Arsenal last weekend, with Peter Crouch or Saido Berahino expected to start in his place.
Southampton v Stoke City Preview and Predictions
With many millions of pounds at stake for Premier League places, this is a game that still very much counts. With places, jobs, transfer budgets and pride on the line, there should be plenty of motivation for this one. There’ll be lots of attacking talent on show too, so there could be a few goals with little pressure on the players’ shoulders.
Southampton have profited from West Brom’s dismal end to the season, leaving Puel’s side the chance to add an impressive eighth place to their appearance in the League Cup final. The Saints will be desperate to finish above south coast rivals Bournemouth too, who travel to Leicester for their final game. Back the hosts at 3/4 to finish off their campaign with a win.
Mark Hughes’ side will be looking to end their season on a high after their own poor run of form. Stoke’s only win in their last 10 games was against relegated Hull, which has seen them slide down the table. Finishing in 16th place would not represent a good campaign for the Potters. They start this one as the underdogs at 17/4, while the draw’s available at 14/5.
Over 3.5 goals at 12/5
This one could be a goal fest with the likes of Austin, Manolo Gabbiadini and Xherdan Shaqiri involved and playing with little pressure.
The 0-0 draw at 10/1
Or it could go the other way, as the players use this game on the south coast as a stepping stone to their summer holidays.
