St Jakob-Park - Champions League

Pep Guardiola takes his Manchester City team to Switzerland to face Basel in the knockout stages of the Champions League. The Blues are still fighting on four fronts with just a few months of the season to go.

Past Meetings

This will be the first meeting between the clubs, so history will be made on Tuesday whatever the result turns out to be.

Team News

Basel boss Raphael Wicky has concerns over three players ahead of this game. Antonio Signorini is struggling with an illness, while goalkeeper Germano Vailati has a shoulder problem and Luca Zuffi has been out with a foot injury.

City could be without talismanic playmaker David Silva, as the Spaniard is recovering from a hip problem. Leroy Sane misses out after going down under a crunching tackle against Cardiff recently, while Gabriel Jesus is nearing a return from a knee injury.

Basel v Manchester City Preview and Predictions

With the Premier League title all but sewn up before we even reach March, each cup competition is taking on ever greater responsibility for Manchester City. Basel are no mugs though, and could prove a tricky opponent for the rampant Blues.

The Swiss champions were in Manchester United’s Champions League group, and beat City’s neighbours 1-0 at St Jakob-Park. They trounced Benfica 5-0 at home, and even beat the Portuguese champions 2-0 in the return game at the Estadio da Luz. It’s no surprise that the hosts start this game as big underdogs though, and they’re priced at 10/1 in the betting.

City meanwhile are available at 4/11, as they look to gain a foothold in the tie to take back to the Etihad in a few weeks time. The Blues have looked unstoppable for most of the season, and after putting five past Leicester at the weekend, it’s not hard to see them putting this game out of Basel’s reach on Tuesday.

One of the home team's best chances of getting a result could be to sit back and try to absorb City’s pressure while playing for a draw, which is priced at 22/5. That’d at least give Wicky’s side a glimmer of hope going into the return leg in Manchester.

Recommended Bets

City to win and both teams to score at 2/1

Guardiola’s side are often involved in exciting games, and while they’re susceptible to conceding on the continent, they should have too much for Basel going forward.

Aguero to score and City to win at 11/10

The Argentinian forward helped himself to four goals at the weekend, and he’ll lead the line once again in Jesus’ absence.
