The world of online eSports betting has slowly started to expand, with a full range of options available including first person shooters (FPS), Multiplayer Online Battle Area (MOBA) games, Realtime Strategy (RTS) and Actions Real Time Strategy (ARTS) options. While most punters have heard of the more popular League of Legends or Dota 2, there are plenty of other electronic sports games that are ideal for online betting. One that is certainly on the rise is Heroes of the Storm (HotS). If you are keen to get in on the HotS action, here is what you need to know:

What is Heroes of the Storm?

Heroes of the Storm is a multiplayer online battle arena eSports game that was developed and published by Blizzard in 2015. The history of the title dates back to 2010, when it was first unveiled as a custom map for the arcade feature in StarCraft 2. The initial unveiling took place at BlizzCon 2010 with the map called Blizzard DOTA. It was very much a work in progress, and when it was unveiled again at BlizzCon 2011, the development team had made significant changes to the format and original concept. The re-release was described as a faster, more streamlined version with plenty of action for the players.

It was around this time that Dota 2 was released by Valve, causing concern for Blizzard since the company trademarked a name that originated from Warcraft II, which Blizzard had created. In the end, Blizzard chose to purchase DotaA-Allstars from Riot Games, the company who created and released the iconic eSports favourite, League of Legends. This was the next step in the HotS evolution. By 2013, Blizzard stated that they wanted to put their own spin on the genre, with their new release titled Blizzard All-Stars. The title officially changed its name to Heroes of the Storm in October that year and went out for testing. After two years of closed and open testing, the official Heroes of the Storm release hit the market in June 2015.

How the Game Works

Heroes of the Storm does not technically fall within the MOBA genre, with Blizzard describing it as a Hero Brawler where the aim is simply to fight and win. A competitive match is played with 2 opposing teams, each made up of 5 players. Each player picks 1 hero from a selection of 75 characters. Most of the characters or heroes will look familiar, as they are popular heroes from Warcraft, Overwatch, Diablo and StarCraft. Unlike DOTA 2 or LoL where all the action takes place on a single map, HotS has 14 different maps, each with their own unique characteristics.

In a competitive eSports match, each player in a team must choose one hero out of the list of 75+. These can be broken down into 3 categories including an Assassin, a Warrior and a Specialist. As with DOTA 2, they all have their strengths and weaknesses, which means teams must be careful on which heroes to pick at the start of each match. In this game, there is no specific task or objective for teams other than to destroy their opponents. The biggest difference is the way the XP points are distributed. When any member of the team reaches a XP threshold, the entire team levels up instead of the one hero. This promotes teamwork rather than allowing a carrier to lead the attack.

Betting Guide

As with most eSports games, Heroes of the Storm offers a good selection of betting markets for both novices and experienced punters. These can be broken down into tournament and match bets. For anyone just starting out, tournament eSports betting is perhaps the best place to begin. Often placed days or weeks in advance, the most popular tournament wager is the outright winner. This simply involves predicting which team will win the finals and lift the trophy at the end of the event. It is also possible to put money on the top 3 teams or the winner of each group. Another interesting tournament wager is the group of winner. In this case, you must accurately predict which group, either A, B, C and so on the winning team will emerge from.

Heroes of the Storm match betting is much the same as any eSports betting wager where you have 2 opposing teams. Also known as a money line or head to head wager, this is where you predict the winning team of a particular match in a once off event or tournament. In the case where two opposing teams are unevenly matched, online bookmakers will give the underdogs a virtual point handicap to make the odds more favourable.

In any given match, there are also prop wagers that can be placed on individual performances and statistics. This is where map betting comes in. Instead of putting money on the overall match, you can predict which team will win the first map of the match. It is also possible to bet on the total number of maps played and the total won by each team. Prop betting also extends to the statistics like first blood, which a wager on which team will make the first kill in a match. You can also predict how a Map will end.

What to Know Before You Bet

Before placing any significant wager on a HotS eSports match, there are plenty of things to consider. Firstly, thought should be given to any changes in the team line-up, where the match is being played, if a team is suffering from travel fatigue and what happened last time these 2 teams met. It is also worth considering that each team performs differentially on different maps with different characters.

Since there are 14 maps available and over 17 characters, the combinations can be quite challenging to predict. Fortunately, most teams stick to a standard set of heroes they like to work with, honing their skills over hours of gameplay. It is advisable to watch how the teams use their characters in previous matches before placing a bet on an upcoming match.
