On Monday,  Jose Mourinho will take his battle-weary troops to Anfield for a seminal clash against arch-rivals Liverpool. With United struggling for form of late and Liverpool blowing teams away with their attacking style and front-foot pressing, Jurgen Klopp’s could be considered favourites for the game.

With Liverpool vs Man United being such a huge game in the football calendar, let’s take a wander down memory lane and recall some of the classic encounters from the past: –

A precursor for classic games in the future, United blew a three-goal lead against their Northern rivals in what was the first-ever league game to be hosted at Old Trafford. Interestingly, United did not lose again at Old Trafford for the remainder of the season, although they did finish behind the Reds in the league.

Manchester United 2 Liverpool 1, in the FA Cup Final 1977

A classic in every sense of the world, United’s stunning Cup Final win came against a dominant Liverpool side that was seeking a treble. Tommy Docherty’s team upset the odds and secured a win against Bob Paisley’s Reds, however, as Jimmy Greenhoff deflected in teammates Lou Macari’s shot for the winner.

In the spring of 1992, Manchester United fans were facing the prospect of winning their first league title in a quarter of a century. A run of poor form and a sudden dearth of goals proved their undoing, however, while a devastating 2-0 defeat at Anfield in April enabled Leeds United to steal a march in the title race. Liverpool-legend Ian Rush also struck his first league goal against United to open the scoring, before Mark Walters secured the win late on.

Less than two years later, United had ended their title hoodoo while the Reds had fallen spectacularly from grace. Alex Ferguson’s all-conquering side was even pursuing a domestic treble when they travelled to Anfield in January and looked to be on course for a stunning win as goals from Steve Bruce, Ryan Giggs and Denis Irwin secured a 3-0 lead inside 22 minutes. Nigel Clough struck twice before the break, however, before Neil Ruddock powered home a late header to secure an unlikely and heroic point.

This clash between the top two started with United seven points clear with a game in hand, while Cristiano Ronaldo’s early penalty gave the Red Devils an early lead. A peak Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard quickly became rampant, however, torturing Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra in particular while scoring a goal each to give the Reds a half-time lead. Vidic was sent off with 15 minutes remaining, before Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena completed a comprehensive victory late on.

While United had the last laugh by winning the league, the result showed just how unpredictable single games between these two giants are.
