An Interactive Guide: Europe’s Greatest Football Fortresses

November 19, 2015

- Grant Whittington

There are few grounds in the world that are genuinely intimidating. You wouldn’t walk into Craven Cottage as a Leeds fan and feel an element of terror, nor would any hardened Barcelona fan feel endangered by a trip to Getafe. A trip to the Camp Nou as a Getafe supporter on the otherhand, well that’s a different story.

Across Europe some grounds both players and fans fear. 40,000-plus fans bearing down on you, flares going off, chants echoing around the arenas. The players know they’re in for a game, and so do the fans, penned in at the highest point in the far corner.

We ran an article recently about the best football experiences in Europe, and it got us thinking, whilst they are fantastic experiences, which are the stadiums that are real fortresses of football? Which are the stadiums where teams visit but rarely come away with three points?

Our new Football Fortress guide shows exactly that, the top stadiums in Europe where the fans get on top of you and players cower as they are run ragged by the eleven men facing them and the 12th man in the stands.

From Germany to the UK, to the east and Serbia where Red Star Belgrade went on an incredible 96 game unbeaten run between 1998 and 2004, Football Fortress examines exactly what makes a ground intimidating.

And it’s pulled up some pretty incredible stats, particularly with teams that have only recently moved stadium. When Galatasaray moved from the Ali Sami Yen Stadium many were relieved, how could the Ultras replicate that atmosphere in a modern stadium full of hospitality boxes and big screens?

52,000 fans actually make it louder than ever before, with the stadium even securing a position in the Guinness Book of Records after fans broke the 131-decibel barrier against arch-rivals Fenerbache in its year of opening.

The guide itself is an immersive experience, with visuals showing 10 of Europe’s most formidable stadiums, as well as stats and information, all to the backdrop of the club’s anthem, bringing you closer than ever before to experiencing a Champions League night at Celtic Park.

Have a click through our fantastic guide and see whether you contribute to your club being one of Europe’s footballing fortresses.
