Five Premier League Stars Who Could Make Their Move in January
January 10, 2017
Traditionally, Christmas is a time for giving, as we exchange gifts with our loved ones and celebrate the festive season in style. This long-standing traditional now continues into January too, as football clubs nationwide look to buy, sell and swap players during a hectic and increasingly lucrative transfer window.
The January transfer window has certainly seen some dramatic developments since its inception, from Fernando Torres’ £50 million transfer in 2011 to Frenchman Christophe Dugarry’s shock arrival at Birmingham in 2003. With this in mind, which players are likely to move this year and shake up the Premier League one more time?
Memphis Depay, Manchester United
When the talented Dutchman arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2015, the £31 million forward was seen as the hottest property in Europe. He has failed to make his mark so far at Old Trafford, however, having struggled during his debut season and not featured in the Reds’ first team since November. Everton manager Ronald Koeman is a known admirer of the pacey winger, while a relatively modest fee of £22 million should be enough to secure a deal.
Morgan Schneiderlin, Manchester United
It is no surprise that we have another Manchester United player next on our list, as Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho is notoriously ruthless and often content to sell his players if they are not part of his plans. This translates into bad news for French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, who is out off favour at Old Trafford after an unconvincing debut season and desperate for game time. Everton and West Bromwich Albion are currently leading a list of potential suitors, although once again the Toffees would appear to have a distinct advantage.
Mamadou Sakho, Liverpool
There is clearly no place at Liverpool for former fans’ favourite Mamadou Sakho, with the 26-year old centre back having fallen out with manager Jurgen Klopp and slipped behind Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan and the impressive Joel Matip in the pecking order at Anfield. While his chequered disciplinary record and high wagers may rule out a move to a rival EPL team, however, Paris St. Germain are thought to be interested in making a January bid as they look to strengthen their back line.
Ross Barkley, Everton
A year ago, the idea of Ross Barkley leaving Everton was unthinkable. The departure of Roberto Martinez and Barkley’s lack of development has altered the player’s status at Goodison Park, however, meaning that new manager Koeman may be tempted to cash in on a valuable and coveted asset. There should be plenty of potential buyers too, although Tottenham’s resources and need for a creative midfielder mean that they are favourites to land the talented Barkley in a deal that could be worth up to £30 million.
Asmir Begovic, Chelsea
Given Chelsea’s current run, it is hard to imagine anyone wanting to leave Stamford Bridge in the January window, with the Blues favourites for the Premier League title . Goalkeepers are the exception to most rules, however, and the talented Blues’ stopper Asmir Begovic could well look for a move away from the Bridge in the quest for first-team football. With the imposing Thibaut Courtois in his way and teams like Stoke and Liverpool thought to be keen on securing his signature, he will have every opportunity to progress his career in the near future.
