Meet the WAGs around the World

December 31, 2017

- Grant Whittington

When we think back to the 2006 World Cup in Germany, all we can remember is the English WAGs who accompanied their husbands throughout the tournament. In hindsight, Sven should probably have named them in the squad, as they would probably have fared better than an off-form Frank Lampard and a half-fit Wayne Rooney.

Without doubt, modern day WAGs have added another dimension to the lives of our favourite players and idols, enriching the global game for the better and allowing players such as Peter Crouch to enjoy a fruitful love-life.

In this post, we’ll look at WAGs from around the world and see what they’re up to as the 2018 World Cup approaches.

1. Irina Shayk

Now, we know that Irina Shayk is now officially an ex-WAG, having split up with Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo after five years together. Still, she deserves inclusion on this list as she’s one of the most accomplished WAGs ever to grace a major tournament, plus she cut a truly elegant figure at the 2014 World Cup.

One of Russia’s most famous models, she has worked extensively with brands such as Armani while she also graced the inaugural cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition in 2011. Interestingly, she also achieved the unique distinction of appearing on the December issue of Men’s Health that very same year, while she featured in every single swimsuit edition until the end of 2014.

Perhaps more importantly in the modern age, she’s ranked eighth in the world for her social media following, with an estimated 8.6 million fans on Instagram alone.

2. Sara Carbonero

Sara Carbonero is often referred to as the Erin Andrews of Spain. She is perhaps most famous as the journalist who was on the receiving end of a huge smacker from goalkeeper Iker Casillas after Spain won their first World Cup in 2010.

A presenter and sports journalist who regularly covers the World Cup, she’d been in a relationship with the former Real Madrid stopper since 2009, so the keeper’s show of affection was more than acceptable.

Despite this, some questioned the journalist’s impartiality and integrity during the 2010 World Cup. There were even allegations that Carbonero, who was standing just 60 yards from Casillas’ goal during a group match with Switzerland, distracted the goalkeeper and even contributed to the Swiss’ winning goal.

These rumours have been vehemently denied, as Carbonero has continued to enjoy a highly successful career in the media industry.

3. Ann-Kathrin Brömmel

This blue-eyed beauty first rose to prominence when competing in the German iteration of the global Next Top Model franchise, even though she didn’t quite manage to win.

Her striking looks have still enabled her to forge a successful modelling career and she has been involved in a relationship with Borussia Dortmund and Germany midfielder Mario Götze, since the summer of 2012.

It’s arguable that the successful Brömmel also served as a good luck charm for Götze during the 2014 World Cup, as he scored the decisive goal during a 1-0 win against Argentina in the final of the tournament.

The attacking midfielder swept home confidently after collecting Andre Schurrle’s left wing pass, sending Brömmel and thousands of Germans into rapture in the stands!

4. Yolanthe Sneijder-Cabau

Another brunette stunner, Sneijder-Cabau (formerly Van Kasbergen), was born on the party island of Ibiza and has built a superb career as an actress, model and television host. She’s now the pop-culture queen of the Netherlands too, having been involved with Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder since 2009 (the two married a year later, just six days after the player had performed against Spain in the World Cup final).

Sneijder-Cabau earned fame for her recurring role in the popular soap-opera Onderweg naar Morgen between 2005 and 2008, while she has also starred in film productions such Snowfever and Costa in 2004 and 2005 respectively.

She also earned a Gouden Kalf (the Dutch equivalent of a coveted Academy Award) nomination for her role in the critically-acclaimed short film Turkse Chick, which showcases her quality as an actress.

Most interestingly, she also appeared in three seasons of the hit drama Voetbalvrouwen, which was based on the iconic British show Footballers’ Wives. She also earned the distinction of being voted ‘the Sexiest Dutch Woman’ by FHM in 2006, 2007 and 2009, so we think it’s fair to surmise that Wesley has done well for himself.
