How Ozil Broke The Assist Record: Heralding The Premier League Creators
December 20, 2015
During the recent North London derby, Arsenal’s talented German international Mesut Ozil broke a Premier League record that had managed to escape the attention of most commentators. More specifically, the attacking midfielder laid on a direct assist for the sixth consecutive game, breaking a record that stood since the beginning of the Premier League era. While Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas managed to assist goals in six consecutive matches previously, this was achieved over two spells with Arsenal and Chelsea that were separated over three years.
Who Has Been Involved In The Most Goals During This Season?
Ozil has been in superb form for the Gunners this year, playing in an advanced role and linked particularly well with Alexis Sanchez. He has assisted a total of 12 goals this season, while also scoring twice to have a hand in 14 of Arsenal’s league strikes so far. Given that the most assists ever recorded by a player during a single Premier League season currently stands at 20 (which was achieved by Thierry Henry during the 2002/03 campaign), Ozil is well on course to beat this record and achieve Premier League immortality.
Despite this and the fact that Ozil has had a hand in an impressive 14 league goals so far this term, he is not statistically the most effective attacker in the Premiership. This honour currently belongs to Everton’s precocious Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku, who scored his 13th league goal of the season against Crystal Palace last weekend. Lukaku has also assisted four goals for the Blues, meaning that he has had a hand in 17 goals overall.
Attacking in Tandem? How Mahrez and Vardy lead the way
Next in line are Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy and wing-wizard Riyad Mahrez, who have combined in devastating fashion as the league’s deadliest double act. Vardy has earned rave reviews by breaking the Premier League record for scoring in 11 consecutive games, scoring 14 in total while also assisting two more. Mahrez, who plundered a hat-trick at Swansea last week, has scored 10 goals in the league and managed to assist six (meaning that both have contributed directly to 16 team strikes).
All of these players have an opportunity to break the record for combined goals and assists in an EPL season, so it will be interesting to see how the action unfolds. For now, however, Ozil remains the king of assists and a true creative force in the modern game.
