Amazon CEO Set to Buy an NFL Team
November 15, 2019
It’s safe to say that multi-billionaire Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos probably has more money than he knows what to do with. The businessman is worth more than $155 billion, and heads up both online shopping behemoth Amazon, and the Washington Post.
Now, in a bid to offload some of his significant hoard of wealth, Bezos is reportedly eyeing the purchase of a sports team. More specifically, he has set his sights on the NFL, and is mulling the purchase of a National Football League team to add to his growing list of achievements.
According to a recent publication from CBS Sports, Bezos has already received plenty of support from NFL team owners, along with the league as a whole. He even accompanied Commissioner Roger Goodell to watch the New England Patriots win against the LA Rams in the Super Bowl LIII in February last year.
Duo of Likely Targets Identified
Which team the Amazon boss will eventually purchase is still unclear. However, the fact that his goal of buying a team has been made public will likely result in numerous franchises being made available for him to choose from.
For now, 2 of the most likely acquisition targets are the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks. The latter team, who brought the San Francisco 49ers’ perfect season to an end a few days ago, lost their previous owner Paul Allen when he unexpectedly passed away in 2018. The team is set to be sold off sometime within the next few years. The Denver Broncos also lost their former owner Pat Bowlen early this year, which led to internal power struggles among his family members. Ultimately, this could also lead to the team being put back on the market.
With all that said, there is another possibility open too. For reasons unknown, Bezos has decided to relocate closer to Washington, meaning that the Washington Redskins could also be an acquisition target. This would certainly please current owner Dan Snyder, and might also assist him in fulfilling his dream of building a sophisticated new stadium in the area.
What the NFL’s Future Holds
These are only the most plausible possibilities based on current developments within the league. The situation could heat up now that it is public knowledge that Jeff Bezos is on the hunt for a team to buy, and more teams could come up for sale following the news as well. Such movements within the NFL can be unpredictable, but it can certainly be predicted that the investor and his money will be welcomed with open arms by at least a few renowned teams.
Out of all the candidates who have the power to own an NFL team, the CEO is one of the very few who could walk into an office and buy one with the change rattling around in his pocket. Naturally, this also makes him a good target for someone who is looking to exit the football industry altogether. For now, we will have to wait and see what the world’s richest man decides to do with his unfathomable wealth…
