Lights, Camera, Ac…GOAL: The Best Goals Captured by Fans
October 22, 2015
The beautiful game has changed considerably in the digital age, primarily due to the plethora of games now available through subscription television channels. The rise of mobile technology has also made it possible for fans to capture their clubs most memorable moments in real-time through their smartphone, before sharing these with others on sites such as YouTube. A number of memorable goals have certainly been captured this way and offered armchair viewers a unique insight into the live viewing experience.
So what exactly are the best goals to have been captured by fans? YouTube is well-populated with some memorable strikes, but here are three of our favourites…
Michael Owen (Manchester United v Manchester City, 2009)
While Michael Owen’s career may have begun before mobile phones were able to do any more than make calls or send texts, his winning goal in the seven goal Manchester derby of 2009 tops our list. With the score tied and 3-3 heading into the sixth minute of stoppage time, Ryan Giggs weighted a perfect through ball into the path of substitute Owen on the left hand side of the penalty area. As Owen slotted the ball beyond Joe Hart to spark bedlam at Old Trafford, the moment was captured perfectly by fans in the North Stand.
Ronaldinho (Barcelona v Sevilla, 2003)
Before the emergence of Lionel Messi, Brazilian star Ronaldinho was arguably the finest player to represent Barcelona in the modern age. He made his debut for the Catalan giants in September 2003, before marking his first start at the Nou Camp with a sublime goal against Sevilla a few days later. A fan captured this moment from behind the Barcelona goal, as Ronaldinho weaved in from the left touchline before curling home a stunning shot from all of 25 yards.
Lionel Messi (Barcelona v Atletico Bilbao, 2015)
On the topic of Lionel Messi, our list would scarcely be complete without an appearance by the diminutive Argentine. Our choice is his spectacular individual strike in the final of last season’s Copa del Rey against Atletico Bilbao, which helped to secure the second leg of Barca’s memorable treble success. Collecting the ball on the right touchline, he dribbled past three defenders before surging into the penalty area, cutting back onto his left foot and firing home inside the near post. The goal was captured in high definition from the side of the pitch, giving us a unique, close-up view of Messi’s incredible ability.
