A few days ago it was tournament hosts France’s turn to announce their intended squad. Former Newcastle and Hull City winger Hatem ben Arfa has unfortunately found himself missing out on a place in the French squad despite putting in an impressive performance and putting away no less than 17 goals for his current club OGC Nice. This decision was mostly due to the fact that West Ham’s Dimitri Payet has also had a blinding season who’ll be taking his place.

As for the England team it’s no doubt been a difficult process for Roy Hodgson to deal with and not because of lack of choice. There have been a stream of unlikely contenders for the international side this season mostly thanks to the incredibly diverse talent shining through over the past few months which has already seen the “lesser” Premier League teams towering above the richer clubs and former champions and leaving them in their wake.

Hodgson’s provisional 26-man squad features the controversial inclusion of Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Newcastle’s Andros Townsend, who has just seen his side drop out of the Premier League. But thanks to his recent run of goals and assists in the few remaining games of the season have done enough to catch the manager’s eye and earn himself a potential seat on the plane come next month.

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is welcomed back into the squad despite missing a large portion of the season with an injury and Leicester City stars Jamie Vardy and Danny Drinkwater have also made the cut. So with Vardy, Rooney, the aforementioned Rashford, Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge and Spur’s Harry Kane all selected for strike duties theirs plenty of choice up front for Hodgson and it’ll be great to see which players gel the best when it comes to partnering for potential goals.

However it’s not all quite done and dusted just yet for the England squad as the team will have to be whittled down even more and a trio of players will be missing out come the 31st May. So it’s up to players such as Rashford to really impress the boss and the England fans during the warm-up games before 26 become 23.
