The Transfers That You May Have Missed During The Euros
July 13, 2016
If you are anything like us, you will have spent the last three weeks engrossed with the peaks and troughs of Euro 2016. No that we have reached the latter stages and there are seemingly endless amounts of time between games, however, it is the ideal time to take a peek above the parfait and see what else is going on in the footballing world.
In case you didn’t know, the summer transfer window has been continuing as normal since June 10th, with many of Europe’s top clubs competing to sign talent from all over the world. From the Premier League to Spain’s La Liga, here are a few of the most interesting deals to have been completed during the last month or so…
Nicolas Gaitan (Benfica to Athletico Madrid, £19.7 million)
A long-time Manchester United target, Argentine Nicolas Gaitan has flirted with a move away from the Portuguese outfit for several years now. He has finally made his move, however, with La Liga outfit Athletico Madrid securing his services for the princely sum of £19.7 million.
Predominantly a left-sided player who can also operate centrally, Gaitan has exquisite touch and a tremendous sense of flair that seems far removed from the Diego Simeone’s ethos. His presence will add some much needed guile to a hard-working and disciplined unit, however, while also freeing up Koke to adopt a more influential, midfield role.
Denis Cheryshev (Real Madrid to Villareal, £8 million)
Liverpool appear to be struggling to make a mark on the summer transfer window, with their prime targets slipping frustratingly out of reach. It hardly helps that former target
Henrikh Mkhitaryan has recently joined Manchester United, while another player previously coveted by the Reds has also moved elsewhere this summer.
Namely, Denis Cheryshev has completed an £8 million move from Real Madrid to fellow La Liga outfit Villareal. The Russian was on loan with the Yellow Submarines last season, and even appeared against the Red’s during Villareal’s semi-final defeat in the Europa League. The cut-price fee is something of a bargain, and this is sure to irk Liverpool fans with the club in desperate need of some creativity.
Miralem Pjanic (Roma to Juventus, £25 million)
Look away Chelsea fans, as one of Antonio Conte’s initial transfer targets has been snapped up by his old club. Reliable midfielder Miralem Pjanic just recently completed a £25 million move from Roma to Juventus, before the incoming Blues’ manager had even landed in London following his last hurrah with the national team at Euro 2016.
Manchester United were also reported to have turned down the chance to sign the talented midfielder, as they instead turn their attention to the French star Paul Pogba. Pjanic is certainly a loss for the Premiership, while it also means that Chelsea will need to look elsewhere to strengthen their midfield.
