Welcome to the Yorkshire Ebor Festival: A Look Ahead

August 18, 2016

- Grant Whittington

The popular Yorkshire Ebor Festival got off to a flying start ion Wednesday, as Boom the Groom held off a spirited challenge from the Duke of Firenze in the opener. Price at a generous 11/1 in the late Juddmonte International Stakes odds, the previous Goodwood winner led from the start and put in a final, heroic kick down the final straight to secure a narrow win.

While victorious trainer Tony Carroll basked in the glow of his charge’s win, however, today’s opener represented just the tip of the iceberg for this prestigious race meeting. With three more days of action to go, fans can expect plenty of twists and turns before a glorious climax at the weekend.

One of the Oldest and Richest Race Meeting: What is Next at the Ebor Festival?

The Ebor Festival is one of the fans’ favourites in the annual race calendar, as stellar horses and trainers merge with fashion and wealth to create the ultimate spectacle. Hosted against the backdrop of a stunning Knavesmire landscape, fan can enjoy four days of sun-kissed action before the climax during the weekend.

Fashion plays a huge role in the event, as it does in many of the most popular race meetings throughout the UK. This is best embodied by Ladies’ Day, where everyone is required to dress up and the best-dressed race goers can compete for a chance to win a complimentary trip to Dubai courtesy of Marriott Hotels.

On Friday, we can look forward to the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes, which is renowned as the fastest races of the flat season. Often a blur of colour and noise, this prestigious race pits the country’s leading sprinters in direct competition and is likely to be more keenly contested than ever this year. Fans will certainly be hoping that this years’ race lives up to the standards set in the corresponding event last year, when local trainer Michael Dods achieved success with Mecca’s Angel.

And Finally…

As you would expect, the event concludes with a bang on Saturday, most notably with the event’s feature race the Betfred Ebor. Arguably one of the most famous and certainly the richest race in Europe, this prestigious handicap has thrived since its debut in the 1840’s and generated a number of stunning results in the centuries since.  From the success of Mudawin, who once romped home at odds of 100/1, to the global sensation Purple Moon, this stellar event creates a buzz that compares with anything else in the national race calendar.

Altogether, this event more than justifies its status as one of the most popular in the UK. It is also one of the richest and most fashion-conscious anywhere in the world, and one that you should definitely try to see over the next few days.
