Will Bale move to Manchester United this summer?

A year is a long time in football, just ask Gareth Bale.

This time last year, Bale was preparing for the Champions League final after already inspiring Real Madrid to a Copa del Rey triumph and scoring a number of spectacular goals during his debut season. Now he appears to be fighting for his professional life in the Spanish capital, after a trophy-less season has left him bearing the brunt of frustration from fans and media pundits alike. The question that remains is whether Bale will stay at Madrid or look to move away and revive his fortunes.

Will Bale move to Manchester United this summer?

Interestingly, the latest noises out of Spain suggest that Gareth Bale is set to stay a fight for his place in Real’s first team. This has come as something of a blow to many of Europe’s leading clubs, who were set to compete for Bale’s world record signature during the summer. Manchester United are thought to be the most disappointed, especially given their proposed summer spending and the contract issues facing star goal keeper David De Gea. With Madrid expected to make an offer for the De Gea at some point in the next 12 months, United were reportedly keen to use this interest as leverage to secure Bale’s signature.

Could Bale still sign for United, however? Certainly Louis Van Gaal’s men will have the financial resources to make a viable bid, especially now they have secured qualification for the Champions League. The lure of Champions League football will also appeal to Bale, who is unlikely to sacrifice this at this stage in his career. Bale is also the sort of player that United need in their front-line, despite the form of Ashley Young this season and the current presence of Argentinian forward Angel Di Maria.

The Bottom Line

Regardless of their statement to the contrary, Madrid are also likely to consider any offers for Bale that match or exceed the world record fee that they paid for the Welshman. This issue with this conundrum appears to be Bale himself, who is thought to be settled in Madrid and keen to achieve sustained success in La Liga. This would certainly suggest that he is likely to stay for one more year at least, while he looks to cement his place and change the existing media perception.
