Will Hamsik Make His Move To The Premier League?

August 18, 2016

- Grant Whittington

While Slovakia may have underwhelmed at Euro 2016, their star player Marek Hamsik at least managed to distinguish himself with a select few moments of brilliance. The Napoli stars highlight came during a 2-1 win over Russia during the group stage of the tournament, as he curled home a stunning right foot finish after a well-worked corner.

Not for the first time, Hamsik’s form has made him the subject of intense transfer speculation, with Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United all said to be keen on the midfielder’s signature. As the summer transfer window continues to rumble on, however, it appears as though either Stamford Bridge or Anfield will be Hamsik’s most likely destination if he does choose to move.

Why Liverpool Are Leading The Charge

Initially, Manchester United were at the head of the queue of clubs competing for the Slovakian star’s signature. With Jose Mourinho’s men on the verge of unveiling Henrikh Mkhitaryan as their latest signing, however, there appears to be little chance of Hamsik arriving at Old Trafford. In fact, the Portuguese manager confirmed that United had only one more transfer target in their sights Dortmund star Mkhitaryan, and most media sources believe this to be Juventus and France midfielder Paul Pogba.

This leaves Liverpool and Chelsea, both of whom are looking to add to their squads after frustrating summers so far. With new Blues’ manager Antonio Conte only just arriving at the Bridge after guiding Italy to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016, however, Jurgen Klopp would appear to have a head-start over their rivals. Given that Liverpool were already on the verge of tabling a significant £34.8 million bid for Napoli’s leading creative force, they have a distinct advantage over the Blues and one that may prove crucial over time.

Marek Hamsik: Will He Stay Or Will He Go?

Additionally, there has been no clear indication made by Chelsea that they are interested in Hamsik’s services, leaving the way Liverpool to negotiate with Napoli and discuss terms with the player. Assuming that they can meet the Italian club’s asking price, the ball will fall in Hamsik’s court as the midfielder decides his next move. Sources suggest that he would be keen on a move the the Premier League, however, while his agent certainly appears to laying the platform for a move.

One thing is for sure; we need to watch this space going forward.
