Arsenal v Chelsea Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
January 02, 2018
Emirates Stadium - Premier League
Although there could be some tired legs, there’s every chance we could be in for a late Christmas cracker as Arsenal host Chelsea on Wednesday evening. The visitors can move into second with a win, while the Gunners need a victory to keep pace with the top four.
There’s only been one away win in the last 10 Premier League meetings between these two, which went Chelsea’s way the January before last. Arsenal won this fixture 3-0 last season, and beat the Blues in the FA Cup final in May. Earlier this season, the teams played out a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge.
Arsene Wenger has plenty of injury worries ahead of this game, with Olivier Giroud, Nacho Monreal, Sead Kolasinac and the match winner in the cup final, Aaron Ramsay, all ruled out. This gives added importance to the late fitness tests that Mesut Ozil and Laurent Koscielny both face.
The Chelsea squad looks fit as a fiddle in comparison, with David Luiz the only significant absentee. Charly Musonda is also out for the Blues, who have the benefit of an extra day’s rest ahead of their trip across London.
Arsenal v Chelsea Preview and Predictions
After a tough festive period for both sides, the extra day off to prepare and the pool of fit players Antonio Conte has to choose from are likely to be major factors in this game. Arsenal are smarting from their last game though, and know that they can’t afford to lose more ground on their rivals for the Champions League places.
Although Wenger has a point regarding the late penalty that was awarded against his team on New Year’s Eve, it doesn’t change the fact that the Gunners dropped another two points. With Tottenham hitting some form and likely to be more consistent in the second half of the season, Arsenal need to take points from other members of the top six.
After conceding 13 goals in six games against top four rivals so far, Wenger must tighten things up at the back if his team are going to win this one. The bookmakers have them at 15/8 to take the points, while the draw is 13/5. The Gunners let a lead slip after coming from behind against Liverpool just before Christmas, and as they’ve drawn four of their last six Premier League games, this could be a tempting bet.
Chelsea meanwhile head to the Emirates on the back of a thumping 5-0 victory over Stoke. There’s very little hope of retaining their title, but this is a chance for the Blues to open up a 10 point gap over their hosts on Wednesday. Conte’s side are slight favourites in the betting, priced at 13/8.
Alexis Sanchez to score anytime at 15/8
Arsenal’s players put on a show of support for their wantaway teammate in their last game, but Sanchez is back amongst the goals and will be a threat.
Chelsea to win and both teams to score at 10/3
The Blues start as favourites for the win, but there’s still a good chance that the Gunners will breach a defence that hasn’t conceded in three games.
