Arsenal v Newcastle Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
December 14, 2017
Emirates Stadium - Premier League
Having been held to a disappointing draw by West Ham in midweek, Arsenal look to bounce back against a struggling Newcastle side. After three losses in a row, the Magpies will be desperate to get some points on the board.
Arsenal have an exemplary record against Newcastle, having won every match against them stretching back to August 2011, with the Magpies most recent win taking place the season before. In the teams’ most recent meeting, the Gunners beat their rivals for the ninth consecutive time thanks to a Laurent Koscielny goal.
Both Shkodran Mustafi and Aaron Ramsey sat out Arsenal’s midweek game against West Ham, and the German defender might be fit in time for Saturday. Ramsey's set to miss out, which could pave the way for Jack Wilshire’s second consecutive start.
Rafa Benitez has no injury worries to deal with at all after Christian Atsu’s return last week. The Newcastle boss will be without Jonjo Shelvey after his late red card on Wednesday though.
Arsenal v Newcastle Preview and Predictions
Arsene Wenger’s men are without a win in three Premier League games, with two draws in their last two. His side are by no means playing badly, and against West Ham had 70% possession and 22 shots, including a strike that hit the post from Iwobi.
Having said this, the Gunners clearly struggled against a side that was set up to defend, and were unable to raise their level to cut through West Ham’s back line. One bright note for Arsenal fans however was Jack Wilshire’s first league start. The English midfielder's key in his side’s transitional play, and is 10/1 for the first goal at the weekend.
Newcastle will have also been disappointed with their midweek result, having dominated for long periods of their 1-0 loss at home to Everton. The Toffees defended their early goal resolutely, but were saved by the post on two separate occasions. Having had the majority of possession and more than double the shots of their opponents, the Magpies will have a very different task against Arsenal, and one they are more accustomed to.
Arsenal are 2/7 favourites for the win, while Newcastle are priced at 12/1 and the draw 11/2. Benitez’s best chance of scoring is likely to come on the break, with Atsu’s pace a key asset. The winger is 7/1 to score anytime.
Mesut Ozil to score first at 8/1
Newcastle will likely defend deep, meaning that an Arsenal goal will likely come from creativity rather than counter-attacks.
Arsenal to win by two goals at 3/1
Newcastle are on a losing streak and always struggle against Arsenal, making this an attractive bet.
