Arsenal v Sunderland Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
May 16, 2017
Tuesday 16 May – Emirates Stadium – Premier League
Arsenal host Sunderland on Tuesday evening at the Emirates, as the Gunners continue their chase for a top four finish. While the visitors have been relegated from the Premier League, Arsene Wenger’s side still have an outside chance of qualifying for the Champions League.
Arsenal are unbeaten in the last 10 against Sunderland, scoring 20 goals to the Black Cats’ five in the process. Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud both bagged braces at the Stadium of Light earlier this season. In the last campaign, the Gunners ran out 3-1 winners at the Emirates in both cup and league.
After hitting another brace against Stoke at the weekend, Giroud is likely to keep his place up front. There’s a doubt over fellow forward Sanchez though, after the Chilean hobbled off after scoring at the Bet365 Stadium. Key defender Laurent Koscielny is another doubt with a calf complaint, while Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain also misses out.
For the visitors, David Moyes is likely to be without Jason Denayer and Victor Anichebe. Both players limped off during Saturday’s defeat against Swansea at the Stadium of Light. George Honeyman is also expected to miss out with a back injury, although Lee Cattermole and Brian Oviedo could return.
Arsenal v Sunderland Preview and Predictions
There’s not much hope for Sunderland in this one, with Arsenal heavy favourites in the betting to dish out more punishment to Moyes’ sorry men. The Black Cats have shown very little fight in the face of relegation, in contrast to Wenger’s troops who have rallied behind their beleaguered boss.
After looking like their season had imploded into one big disaster, the Gunners have recovered brilliantly in recent weeks. Despite losing the North London derby against Spurs, Arsenal have won six out of their last seven. This has set them up for a late charge for the top four, as well as an FA Cup final.
Qualifying for the Champions League and winning the cup would represent a decent return for Wenger, considering the vitriol that’s been directed his way at times this season. The Frenchman does need Liverpool or Manchester City to drop points in order to sneak into the top four though. In the meantime, Arsenal must take care of their own business. They’re strong 1/8 favourites to do so against Sunderland.
The Wearsiders showed their supporters a glimmer of pride by beating Hull 2-0 at the KCOM Stadium last week, before yet another home defeat against Swansea at the weekend. They go to the Emirates as massive 28/1 underdogs, while the draw’s available at 10/1.
Giroud to score first in 3-1 Arsenal win at 33/1
Giroud is fighting for his Arsenal future and a place in the FA Cup final team. Back him to score first as Arsenal make it three 3-1 home wins in a row against Sunderland.
The 0-0 draw at 41/1
There’s been three stalemates in the last 10 games between the two sides. Go for this great value bet if you think it’ll be a frustrating evening for Arsenal as they all but miss out on the top four.
