October 25, 2017
AMEX Stadium - Premier League
Brighton host Southampton on Sunday in a south coast derby, with both sides securing excellent wins in last weekend's Premier League action.
With Brighton having never played in the Premier League prior to this season, this is the first time these two sides have met since the 2011/12 season, where spoils were shared as both sides picked up a 3-0 home win.
Interestingly both games featured red cards, with Mauricio Taricco seeing red for Brighton as a Rickie Lambert won it for Southampton. And at Brighton, Lambert and Gordon Greer were both dismissed as the hosts ran out as winners.
Both managers will relieved to see their injury lists reducing, with just one player from each side already ruled out of the game at the weekend. Midfielder Steve Sidwell remains out of action with long term back injury, and the veteran former Reading man will not return to action until November.
Manager Chris Hughton is likely to continue with Davy Propper and former Southampton youngster Dale Stephens in midfield, in Sidwell's absence
French defender Jeremy Pied is out for the Saints with a knee injury, and is not expected to be fit in time for Sunday's game, Cedric Soares and Ryan Bertrand will continue as full backs.
Brighton v Southampton Preview and Predictions
Both sides head into Sunday's game with real confidence following impressive wins last weekend, with hosts Brighton winning 3-0 at West Ham and Southampton beating West Brom 1-0 at home.
Brighton have got themselves on to a relatively solid run of form in recent weeks, losing just one - to Arsenal, in their last four Premier League games.
Southampton are unbeaten in their last two games, losing two previously - to Manchester United and Stoke City.
There is little to pick between these sides, particularly as both have picked up in recent games and there is no clear underdog and with that in mind a draw looks to be the most sensible prediction - priced at 9/4.
Both sides also rediscovered their goal scoring touch, with Brighton scoring in all but one of their last six Premier League games, with Southampton netting five in their last six.
Alongside this, there is plenty of attacking talent on display, with Glenn Murray, Anthony Knockaert and Pascal Gross for the hosts and Shane Long, Manolo Gabbiadini and Dusan Tadic for the visitors, so an over 2.5 goals bet looks to be a good option - priced at 7/5.
A 2-2 draw at 20/1
Both sides will be buoyed by recent results, and with attackers in form for both sides, this should be an entertaining game. Brighton have the more unified defence, however the pace of Long and Tadic will cause them problems, likewise the physicality of Murray and Gross will be a concern for the visitors back four.
Glenn Murray to score first at 6/1
Experienced campaigner Murray has been a welcome boost for Brighton, following his return from injury. Two goals against West Ham got the former Crystal Palace man up and running for the season, and he will look to impose himself on Southampton from the start. The set piece delivery of Gross and Knockaert will also be threat will the likes of Murray, Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy around.
