Burnley v Chelsea Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
April 17, 2018
Turf Moor – Premier League
Burnley are the in-form side as they host last season's Premier League champions, Chelsea, in their pursuit of a top five finish. The Blues mounted an impressive comeback against Southampton at the weekend, but have given up hope on retaining a Champions League spot.
Burnley beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the opening game of the season, in an action packed match that saw five goals and two red cards. Gary Cahill saw red early in the game, for an overzealous challenge, before Sam Vokes scored either side of a Stephen Ward goal. With the Blues trailing, Alvaro Morata scored his first Premier League goal, before Cesc Fabregas saw a second yellow and David Luiz hit the back of the net with two minutes remaining.
Ben Mee is a a big loss for Sean Dyche's side, with the centre-back having missing the last two games. His replacement, Kevin Long has replaced in his absence and will be sure to start on the weekend. Steven Defour, Robbie Brady and Jonathan Walters are all long-term absentees for the Tykes.
Antonio Conte has no new injuries to contend with, although is running short on centre-backs with David Luiz and Ethan Ampadu sidelined.
Burnley v Chelsea Preview and Predictions
Going into the game, bookmakers have Chelsea as overwhelming favourites, with Burnley out to 3/1 to win at home. Whilst this would have made sense before the season started, the Clarets have won their last five games, are unbeaten at home since January, and have already beaten the Blues this season.
Chelsea, on the other hand, have failed to match their consistency of last season, with their last game, against Southampton, a perfect representation of this. The former Champions fell two goals behind in the first half, looking utterly disinterested, before putting in a rousing second period performance to win by three goals to two. Against Burnley, who have conceded the third fewest goals in the league, they will not be handed an opportunity to get back into the game.
Dyche's side also impressed at the weekend, with a win over league rivals, Leicester. Two goals within the opening ten minutes, from Chris Wood and Kevin Long, were all that the Tykes needed as they ground out a win, despite a second half goal from Jamie Vardy.
Squad depth may well be a deciding factor, as Antonio Conte has the resources to rotate his starting XI to a greater extent that the home manager. Fans may get a rare glimpse of Ross Barkley and Emerson, who will be able to provide fresh legs for the Blues. Regardless, it will be a big ask for Chelsea to take three points at Turf Moor, with Burnley looking for the win themselves.
Olivier Giroud to score anytime at 7/4
The Frenchman inspired Chelsea's comeback against Southampton and should be rewarded with a start.
Under 2.5 goals at 6/5
Burnley have been solid in defence this season, with Chelsea's attack yet to fire on all cylinders.
