Burnley v Southampton Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
February 20, 2018
Turf Moor - Premier League
Burnley host Southampton at Turf Moor on Saturday, with the relegation-threatened visitors currently lying in the Premier League’s bottom three. The Clarets meanwhile still have a chance of qualifying for next season’s Europa League.
Burnley have won the last two meetings between the teams 1-0, which includes a victory at St Mary’s in early November. That game ended a run of six home victories in this fixture, with Southampton winning four of those.
Sean Dyche is hopeful that a two-week break will help to soothe his injury worries, with the Clarets boss having doubts over eight players at present. James Tarkowski, Phil Bardsley and Chris Wood could all be fit for this game, although forwards Jonathan Walters and Robbie Brady miss out.
Southampton also have concerns over a number of key players, with the likes of Shane Long, Steven Davis, Maya Yoshida and Sofiane Boufal all carrying problems. Striker Charlie Austin is expected to miss another month or so with his thigh injury, so new signing Guido Carrillo needs to find his shooting boots.
Burnley v Southampton Preview and Predictions
After getting a point against runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City in their last outing at Turf Moor, Burnley need to go one better against Southampton and get back to winning ways. The Saints meanwhile can move out of the relegation zone with a victory, with a number of fellow strugglers playing each other at the weekend.
The Clarets have now gone 11 games without a win in all competitions, with few of those more disappointing than when they conceded a late goal to lose at struggling Swansea last time out. With Southampton playing in the FA Cup on Saturday, the extra week may prove crucial in this one, with Dyche having the opportunity to regroup after such a poor run.
Burnley are 19/10 to pick up their first win since mid-December, while at 15/8 the visitors start the game as slight favourites in the betting. The Saints’ only defeat in their last eight games came against Liverpool, while Mauricio Pellegrino’s side claimed a point at Old Trafford not too long ago. With that it mind, the draw could be an option at 21/10, as Southampton have been difficult to beat of late despite their lowly position.
Burnley to win 1-0 at 13/2
The Clarets have been involved in 12 games that have ended 1-0 this season, and this is a decent price for them to record their third straight victory over Southampton by this scoreline. The Saints are also 13/2 to win by the same margin.
Carrillo to score the only goal of the game at 28/1
The Argentinian is looking for his first Southampton goal after moving to the club from Monaco, and this would be the perfect game to get it. Burnley striker Wood is priced at 21/1 for the same bet.
