Cardiff v Chelsea Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
March 28, 2019
Cardiff City Stadium - Premier League
Chelsea are without a win in two games as they travel to relegation threatened Cardiff for the Sunday afternoon Premier League kick off. The Bluebirds have upped their form in recent weeks, but remain one place clear of safety with time running out.
Chelsea tore Cardiff to pieces when the sides met at Stamford Bridge back in September. Despite Sol Bamba opening the scoring, a hattrick from Eden Hazard and a strike from Willian made sure that the home side game out on top.
Chelsea's international players put in strong performances during the break with Olivier Giroud and Callum Hudson-Odoi in particular making his case for Maurizio Sarri. Ruben Loftus-Cheek remains side-lined with a minor injury, joining long-term absentee Ethan Ampadu.
Callum Patterson is a doubt for Neil Warnock's side, meaning that Everton loanee Oumar Niasse may start for the Bluebirds. Sol Bamba is also set to miss out, leaving a significant gap in the back line, whilst Harry Arter is set for late-tests to determine his fitness.
Cardiff v Chelsea Predictions and Previews
Following a turn in form at the beginning of the year, Cardiff fortunes are improved, yet they will have to put in a special performance to beat the Blues this weekend.
Having failed to win either of the two games in hand of their top-four rivals, Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea are back under pressure. A loss to Everton and a draw against Wolves may not be embarrassing results, yet the need for a Champions League finish could well spell doom for the Italian manager.
With Eden Hazard set to leave the club over the summer, and a potential transfer ban pending, the mood is sombre at Stamford Bridge, and has been reflected on the pitch. Difficulties to break defensive teams down, and weakness against rapid counter-attacks set the London club up poorly against their hosts on Sunday.
Cardiff have played a similar style of football from the outset of the season, holding a deep-line with only Callum Patterson offering an attacking threat at 4/1 to score this weekend. However, in recent weeks, Neil Warnock's side have started to find goals from other areas of the pitch, doing almost enough to drag them out of the relegation zone.
Despite potentially missing his two top scorers through injury, the manager will know how Chelsea will approach the game, and will be more than happy to play with limited offensive ambition, but will be far more hopeful of a result than when the sides last met.
Neither Cardiff nor Chelsea fans will expect a particularly thrilling match, with the home side striving to nullify the visitors attacking impetus. However, an early goal for Sarri's team could force the Bluebirds to open up, giving spectators a more eventful spectacle.
Olivier Giroud to score last at 9/2
The striker scored twice during the week to become France's third highest goal-scorer, and should get some minutes at the weekend.
Under 2.5 goals scored at 10/11
Chelsea have scored just once in their last 180 minutes off football, with Cardiff offering little more.
