Cardiff v Newcastle Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
August 14, 2018
Cardiff City Stadium - Premier League
Two teams who lost their first games of the new season meet in South Wales on Saturday, as Cardiff City take on Newcastle United. There were signs of encouragement for both sides last weekend, but it’s all about getting points on the board.
Newcastle have won their last three games against the Bluebirds, including a 2-0 victory on their last visit to the Cardiff City Stadium. The hosts are looking for their first league victory against the Magpies since 1981.
Icelandic international Aron Gunnarsson is set to miss out again, although loan signing Harry Arter is ready to step into the side for his debut. Kenneth Zohore could be fit after a niggle in his groin kept him out of Cardiff’s opener last weekend.
DeAndre Yedlin injured his knee in Newcastle’s defeat against Tottenham on Saturday, and he’s set to miss this one. Federico Fernandez switched the Swans for the Magpies during the summer, and he could be in line for his debut.
Cardiff v Newcastle Preview and Predictions
This season looks like being one of the most competitive we’ve seen in recent years when it comes to the battle for survival. Neither of these teams want to get drawn into a relegation battle, so registering some early points is hugely important.
Cardiff had their moments on the opening weekend of the season, but they ultimately fell to a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth. Neil Warnock always gets his teams well organised, but the veteran boss needs his forwards to do the business in front of goal. If they’re going to have a chance of avoiding the drop straight back down to the Championship, they need the likes of new boy Bobby Reid to start firing.
The Bluebirds are 11/5 in the betting, so they start as the underdogs despite their home advantage. Newcastle are 8/5 for the win, as they look to improve on their showing against Tottenham last weekend. They showed plenty of character against a superior side, but couldn’t find a way past Hugo Lloris in the second half. To that end, loan signing Salomon Rondon’s goalscoring form’s going to be crucial. If you think this game will end in a draw, that’s available at 21/10.
Both teams to score at 11/10
Nothing’s going to be decided in August, so there should be little pressure on both sets of players. With that in mind, an over 2.5 goals bet is 39/25.
Reid to score first at 7/1
The English forward bagged 19 goals in 46 Championship appearances for Bristol City last season, and he’s looking to make the step up to top flight football.
