Chelsea v Burnley Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
August 08, 2017
Champions Chelsea kick off the defence of their Premier League crown on Saturday, with Burnley the visitors to Stamford Bridge. It’s not been the best of summers for Antonio Conte, but the Blues are favourites for the three points here.
It’s been almost 44 years since Burnley last beat Chelsea in the league. The Clarets did manage a win on penalties in the League Cup in 2008, but the Blues are dominant in recent fixtures. Conte’s side won 3-0 at Stamford Bridge last season, while the corresponding fixture was a 1-1 draw.
Chelsea will be without star man Eden Hazard for the season opener as he recovers from an ankle injury. New signing Tiemoue Bakayoko is also absent with a knee injury, meaning Cesc Fabregas is likely to start in midfield. Fellow new boys Antonio Rudiger and Alvaro Morata are in line to make their Premier League debuts.
For Burnley, new arrivals such as Jonathan Walters and Phil Bardsley could make debuts of their own. Jack Cork, a product of the Chelsea youth academy, will make his second bow for the club after playing for the Clarets on loan earlier in his career. Dean Marney is around two months away from a return after a cruciate ligament injury last season.
Chelsea v Burnley Preview and Predictions
Despite all the acrimony around Stamford Bridge this summer, Chelsea are expected to be a major force once again. It’s a tough ask for Sean Dyche’s side to get anything from their trip to west London, but the Clarets showed last season that they’re capable of great performances.
The Diego Costa saga rumbles on for Conte, who wanted this issue resolved before the start of the season. Fellow Spaniard Morata had a debut to forget in the Community Shield defeat against Arsenal, but will battle with Michy Batshuayi for a place in the starting lineup. Whoever gets the nod up front, Chelsea should have enough to see off the Burnley challenge. The champions are priced at 1/4 in the betting for this one.
The visitors had a number of encouraging results in the opening months of the last campaign, including wins over Liverpool and Everton and a draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford. There’s no doubt Dyche will be after more reinforcements before the transfer window closes, but this game’s an opportunity for his current players to show what they can do. The Clarets are heavy underdogs at 29/2, while the draw’s available at 6/1.
