Chelsea v Liverpool Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
September 18, 2019
Stamford Bridge - Premier League
We could be in for a cracking game on Sunday as Chelsea welcome Liverpool to Stamford Bridge, with both teams looking to bounce back from Champions League defeats. The Blues have begun the new season in mixed fashion, while the Reds are looking to maintain their 100% record this weekend.
Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties to win the UEFA Super Cup last month, and the Reds also won 2-0 at Anfield the last time the teams played in the Premier League. That’s Liverpool’s only victory in their last six domestic meetings, with Chelsea winning twice and a 1-1 draw in last term’s fixture at Stamford Bridge.
Blues manager Frank Lampard is hopeful that N’Golo Kante will be available for this huge game, while Callum Hudson-Odoi and Antonio Rudiger are doubts. Mason Mount looks set to miss out after a horror challenge on his ankle against Valencia on Tuesday, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Emerson Palmieri are also injured.
Naby Keita is expected back in training this week and could make the bench this weekend, although the midfielder won’t be rushed back. No.1 goalkeeper Alisson remains on the sidelines with a calf problem, while Nathaniel Clyne is out for the long term. Divock Origi is expected to miss this game, but could be back next week.
Chelsea v Liverpool Preview and Predictions
Liverpool may not have the greatest record against Chelsea over recent seasons, but the visiting Reds are the favourites to pick up the win this weekend. Jurgen Klopp’s side have won all five of their fixtures so far this term, scoring 15 goals in the process, while Chelsea have won two and drawn two of their matches.
Both sides were in Champions League action on Tuesday night, Liverpool beginning the defence of their European crown with a 2-0 loss away to Napoli. At the same time, Chelsea spurned a late penalty in their 1-0 defeat at home to Valencia, marking a disappointing return to the European elite for the club.
While the Blues are a team in transition, the Reds are going from strength to strength. They already have a five-point lead over title rivals Manchester City, and with the champions suffering an injury nightmare in defence, Liverpool need to continue to capitalise.
With Tammy Abraham already on seven Premier League goals, and Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah on four apiece, this game could be a high-scoring affair. Liverpool usually possess the tools to outscore most opponents when matches turn into a firefight, and they are the 19/20 favourites for the win. Chelsea are 13/5 to record their biggest win under Lampard, while the draw’s available at 11/4.
Over 2.5 goals at 4/7
These two teams have scored 26 goals between them this season, and have forward players in the kind of form to see this bet come home.
Liverpool to win and over 2.5 goals at 13/8
Despite their midweek defeat, the Reds have been excellent at the start of the new season, and should get the win against a Chelsea side still trying to find their new identity.
