Chelsea v Manchester City Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
February 20, 2019
Wembley Stadium - League Cup
After Manchester City annihilated Chelsea just over a week ago, it doesn’t seem like there’s much hope for the London side and their beleaguered manager. Another heavy defeat on Sunday could spell the end for Maurizio Sarri, while City are starting to set their sights on an unprecedented quadruple.
City thrashed Chelsea 6-0 the weekend before last, exacting revenge for Sarri’s side ending their unbeaten start to the season back in December. That win ended a run of three straight defeats for Chelsea against the Citizens, after the Manchester club beat them twice last season and in this term’s Community Shield.
Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is a doubt for this game with a hamstring injury. If the Spaniard isn’t fit to play, former City stopper Willy Caballero will come into the side. Pedro, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Davide Zappacosta should all be okay after injury and illness, along with two of Chelsea’s forgotten men, Gary Cahill and Danny Drinkwater.
Sergio Aguero bagged a hat-trick against Chelsea earlier this month, but his place in the domestic cups is always under threat from Gabriel Jesus. The Brazilian has been struggling with a hamstring issue though, so may not be fit for this game. John Stones has a groin problem that could keep him out, while Vincent Kompany is expected to be back.
Chelsea v Manchester City Preview and Predictions
After City swatted Chelsea aside with consummate ease at the Etihad, it may seem like a foregone conclusion that the Citizens will successfully defend the League Cup trophy. However, this is still a cup final, and Chelsea did beat City earlier this season. Another victory over the Premier League champions may well save Maurizio Sarri’s job.
That’s highly unlikely to happen though. Chelsea have been awful in recent weeks, with their manager showing no capacity for adapting his game plan no matter the team he’s playing, and the strengths and weakness of not only his opponents, but his own players. The Blues were knocked out of the FA Cup on Monday, comfortably beaten at home by Manchester United.
City are a cut above both United and Chelsea. With Championship side Swansea standing between them and a place in the FA Cup semi-finals, things are looking good for Pep Guardiola’s side right now. They are favourites for the Champions League, and could have the outright lead in the league as well as the Carabao Cup in the bag come Sunday night.
The Citizens are huge favourites to win this Wembley showpiece, priced at 3/5. Chelsea meanwhile are 9/2, with the draw after 90 minutes available at 18/5. It’s 1/3 for City to lift the trophy by any method, while Chelsea are 11/4 for the same bet.
City to win to nil at 7/4
Chelsea couldn’t get near City in their recent meeting, while Guardiola’s side won to nil at Wembley in the Community Shield at the start of the season.
Aguero to score first at 18/5
The Argentinian striker is in wonderful form right now. He’s been starting games quickly, smashed a hat-trick against Chelsea less than two weeks ago, and had a rest in the FA Cup last weekend.
