Chelsea v Middlesbrough Predictions, Betting Tips & Previews
May 04, 2017
Monday 8 May – Stamford Bridge – Premier League
Chelsea welcome Middlesbrough to Stamford Bridge on Monday night, as Antonio Conte’s side close in on the Premier League title. At the other end of the table, defeat for Boro could mean relegation depending on the weekend’s other results.
Chelsea have won the last seven games against Middlesbrough, with Diego Costa scoring the only goal in the Blues’ 1-0 victory in November. Prior to this season, the teams hadn’t faced each other in the league since January 2009. On that day, a Salomon Kalou double secured the points in Luiz Felipe Scolari’s penultimate game at Stamford Bridge.
David Luiz is expected to be fit after coming off against Everton last weekend. Chelsea boss Conte doesn’t believe the Brazilian defender suffered a serious injury, leaving the Italian with a full complement of players to choose from.
Steve Agnew meanwhile will hope to have goalkeeper Victor Valdes back after his rib injury. Middlesbrough’s defence could be further boosted by the return of Daniel Ayala, after the Spaniard missed the Manchester City game. Midfielder Grant Leadbitter could also play after a hamstring problem.
Chelsea v Middlesbrough Preview and Predictions
Depending on how the weekend’s results pan out, Chelsea could have just a single point lead over Tottenham going into this game. Middlesbrough meanwhile could need a win at Stamford Bridge to keep their Premier League survival hopes alive. Monday’s game is one of real contrasts, but the bookmakers are united in their belief that the hosts start as overwhelming favourites in the betting.
After losing against Manchester United at Old Trafford, Chelsea have recovered well. Last weekend’s trip to Everton was the Blues’ most difficult task on paper, and they passed with flying colours. Three of Chelsea’s four remaining games are at home – win these and they’re Premier League champions. Conte’s side are heavy 2/11 favourites to kick off this sequence by seeing off Boro on Monday.
The visitors are teetering on the brink of relegation, and they could need an unlikely win at Stamford Bridge to stay in the Premier League. Either way, another defeat would almost certainly mean curtains for the Teessiders. Agnew’s men have shown a bit of fight in their last two games though, beating Sunderland in the Tees-Wear derby before claiming a point against Manchester City. Boro are huge 22/1 underdogs to continue their impressive run with a win, with the draw at 8/1.
Chelsea to win to nil at 3/4
The Blues haven’t conceded a goal against Middlesbrough in the last seven games they’ve played each other. This bet is a great way to enhance the odds on a Chelsea win.
Costa to score first in 3-0 Chelsea win at 16/1
It’s hard to see anything other than a heavy win for Chelsea, as Diego Costa sets them on their way.
