Chelsea v Newcastle Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
January 24, 2018
Stamford Bridge - FA Cup
Chelsea host Newcastle in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday, as last season’s beaten finalists look to go one better this time. Although it’s highly unlikely, a win for the visiting Magpies would be a massive boost during a tumultuous period for the club.
Despite going behind to an early Dwight Gayle strike when the teams met at the start of December, Chelsea recovered to win 3-1 thanks to an Eden Hazard brace either side of a goal from Alvaro Morata.
The Blues were even bigger winners at Stamford Bridge the season before last as they cantered to a 5-1 victory, although Newcastle let a two goal lead slip to draw in the first game of that campaign between the pair.
Cesc Fabregas is Chelsea’s biggest doubt coming into this game, as the playmaker struggles with a hamstring strain. Morata should be fit to play after a recent back problem, while Thibaut Courtois, Gary Cahill and Danny Drinkwater are all expected to be available.
Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez could ring the changes if he prioritises his side’s upcoming Premier League fixtures over this difficult cup game. He could welcome back a trio of players from injury, with Aleksander Mitrovic, Florian Lejeune and Chancel Mbemba all pushing for a return to action.
Chelsea v Newcastle Preview and Predictions
After the huge struggle to eventually overcome Norwich on penalties in the third round, perhaps Antonio Conte will name a slightly stronger side for the visit of Newcastle. The travelling Magpies supporters will hope they don’t have to watch a much-changed team of their own, as Chelsea could put a weakened lineup to the sword.
For all the excitement of the tie with Norwich, a replay that went on to include extra-time, penalties and two red cards must have felt like a nightmare for Conte. Although he might’ve expected the players at his disposal to see off the Canaries with greater ease, the Italian boss might decide to name the likes of Hazard, Morata and N’Golo Kante in his starting XI and hand out the rests once the game is won.
The hosts are 4/9 favourites in the betting, with Newcastle available at 15/2. The Magpies’ season just can’t seem to get going, and with his team just a point above the Premier League drop zone, Benitez could see this week as an opportunity to get a few of his key players rested for the challenge ahead.
Chelsea aren’t in the best form at present though, after drawing five games in a row before Saturday’s win at Brighton. If you think the visitors will condemn the Blues to another stalemate and force the replay at St James’ Park, the draw is priced at 4/1.
Hazard to score and Chelsea to win at 3/1
The Belgian playmaker was back among the goals with a brace at the weekend, and this looks a good way to get a lot more value out of the home win.
0-0 draw at 29/2
This isn’t a bad price for this bet, considering the goalless draw would be a fourth in just three weeks for the Blues.
