Chelsea v Roma Predictions, Beting Tips and Previews
October 16, 2017
Stamford Bridge - Champions League
Faltering in their defence of the Premier League title, a win for Chelsea over Roma can give them firm command of their Champions League group. Already top of the group, Antonio Conte’s team can open up a five point gap over the Italian outfit.
The Blues and Gialorossi have met four times. Their last meetings came in this competition nine years ago when both games were home wins. Chelsea won 1-0 at Stamford Bridge but lost 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico, with John Terry scoring in both fixtures. Way back in the mid-sixties Roma lost 4-1 in London in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, while there was a goalless draw in the Eternal City.
After missing the shock defeat at Crystal Palace, Alvaro Morata is back in training and hoping to face Italian opposition for the first time in a Chelsea shirt. On the other hand N’Golo Kante is out with a hamstring problem and his old Leicester team mate Danny Drinkwater is still injured. To add to Conte’s problems Victor Moses limped out of the weekend match at Selhurst Park with a hamstring injury.
Roma are expected to be without Kevin Strootman, Patrik Schick, Gregoire Defrel, Emerson Palmieri and probably Stephan El Shaarawy too. Kostas Manolas also added to Roma’s injury woes after getting hurt against Napoli on Saturday.
Chelsea v Roma Preview and Predictions
Going into this Group C game, Chelsea are 4/6 to win with Roma priced at 5/1 and the draw at 3/1. With their attacking riches the Blues have plenty of options to test Roma. Alvaro Morata is 16/5 to open the scoring with Michy Batshuayi at 15/4.
For Roma, Edin Dzeko will relish being on English soil again. Well capable of burying any chances that come his way the former Manchester City striker's 11/2 for the first goal and the chance to remind the Bridge of his old club’s recent victory there.
After five solid wins in a row, including a Champions League away win at Qarabag, Roma perhaps had an eye on their trip to London as their winning run ended at home to Napoli on Saturday. The Italian side's driving force is 29-year old Belgium international Radja Nainggolan who regularly attracts interest from the Premier League and will want to show he can excel against the English champions.
With Atletico Madrid only having one point from two games after Chelsea beat them on their own turf and back markers Qarabag pointless, victory here will give Conte’s side some breathing space and make them hot favourites to progress.
Eden Hazard to score at any time at 13/8
Hazard’s ability to pop up and carry the ball in tight spaces could tell in a game against well drilled Roma.
Edin Dzeko to score first at 11/2
Dzeko has seven goals in seven Serie A games this season, scored in the last Champions league game and has 10 goals in total already this season.
