Crystal Palace v Newcastle Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
September 18, 2018
Selhurst Park - Premier League
Crystal Palace welcome Newcastle to Selhurst Park on Saturday, with the visitors still looking for their first win of the season. That doesn’t tell the whole story, but the Magpies will face a tough challenge against the Eagles.
The teams drew 1-1 in the corresponding fixture last season, while Newcastle won the two games before that at St James’ Park 1-0. Prior to those three low-scoring games, Palace smashed Newcastle 5-1 at Selhurst Park in November 2015, with the Magpies relegated at the end of that season.
Christian Benteke is a doubt for the hosts as he struggles with a niggling knee issue that Roy Hodgson is unwilling to put a timescale on. Fellow striker Connor Wickham is also out, along with Scott Dann and Pape Souare.
Jamaal Lascelles twisted his ankle in the warm-up for Newcastle’s game against Arsenal last weekend, and the Magpies captain is a doubt for this one. Florian Lejeune is a long-term absentee as he recovers from knee surgery.
Crystal Palace v Newcastle Preview and Predictions
Can Newcastle finally get their first win? Can Wilfried Zaha survive the game without his leg being broken? Or will the Ivorian winger put in another masterclass performance to deliver the points for his team yet again.
It’s certainly true that Zaha needs protecting from dangerous challenges, and it’ll be interesting to see if the referee on Saturday has paid any attention to the electric forward’s plea. If he has, Palace to score a penalty could come into play at 6/1 here.
In the outright market, Crystal Palace are the 21/20 favourites. They didn’t win a single game without Zaha last term, and the same run continued as they lost 2-0 at Southampton just before the international break. When Zaha returned at Huddersfield last weekend, he bagged the only goal of the game.
Newcastle are 16/5 and Rafael Benitez will certainly have a plan to clip the wings of the Eagles’ biggest threat. The Toon Army are yet to see their team win so far this term, but they’ve played Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham in their first four fixtures. The visitors got a draw in their game at Cardiff, and are 5/2 to claim a point in this one.
Zaha to score first at 5/1
The Ivorian has started the new season in rampaging fashion, and he’s right up there among the best players in the league.
Newcastle to win 1-0 at 10/1
Or back Benitez to stop Zaha with this bet, as Newcastle finally get their first win by edging a tight contest.
