Crystal Palace v Southampton Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
August 28, 2018
Selhurst Park - Premier League
Crystal Palace and Southampton meet at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon, with each side desperate for a win to kick-start their season. Both teams have lost their last two games, but one of them has been more impressive than the other.
Both sides won away from home in this fixture last season, with Southampton recording a 1-0 victory at Selhurst Park. There were four home wins in a row before that, and since they’ve both been in the Premier League from the 2013/14 season onwards, Southampton have won seven of the 10 league meetings, with Palace taking the other three.
Pape Souare, James Tomkins and Scott Dann are all injured for the hosts and set to miss out. Roy Hodgson could welcome back Connor Wickham and Jonny Williams after fitness problems, although neither will expect to start.
The visitors have no new injury concerns coming into this game. The only player Mark Hughes will be missing is Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who is suspended after his sending off against Leicester on Saturday.
Crystal Palace v Southampton Preview and Predictions
Although they’ve both lost their last two games, there’s much more optimism for Crystal Palace than Southampton regarding the season ahead. The Eagles have played some great stuff at times, whereas Southampton’s problems from the last campaign seem set to continue.
As Virgil van Dijk’s influence upon Liverpool is being widely recognised, Mark Hughes has had to replace the imposing Dutchman in his defence. Jannik Vestergaard could turn out to be a decent signing, but the Saints look frail at the back and have conceded twice against both Everton and Leicester.
The likes of Wilfried Zaha could have a field day at the weekend, as the Eagles forward looks to build on his impressive start. Quieter in the defeat at Watford on Sunday, Zaha still scored a nice goal and now has two in three.
His presence in the Palace attack contributes to the home side’s price of evens. Despite their miserable form which has seen them win just three times in their last 28 Premier League outings, the bookmakers are giving Southampton a chance at 17/5. The draw might be the most the visitors can hope to take back down to the south coast with them though, and that’s priced at 64/25 in the betting.
Zaha to score first at 11/2
The 25-year-old always looks dangerous, particularly compared to his strike partner Christian Benteke. These are decent odds for Zaha to open the scoring with his third goal of the season.
Palace to win and both teams to score at 17/5
The hosts are the favourites in this game but they’ve conceded four times in their last two matches - the likes of Charlie Austin and Danny Ings will fancy their chances of getting an opportunity or two.
