Everton v Liverpool Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
April 05, 2018
Goodison Park - Premier League
Everton host Liverpool at Goodison Park in the 231st Merseyside derby, with the visitors bouncing after a superb midweek victory in the Champions League. The mood’s a bit different for the blue half of Merseyside, as Sam Allardyce battles towards a top half finish.
Amazingly, Everton haven’t recorded a single win against Liverpool since a 2-0 victory at Goodison Park in October 2010. The Reds have won eight of the 16 meetings since, including a 2-1 FA Cup win at Anfield in January. In the corresponding fixture last season, Sadio Mane scored a 94th minute winner for the visitors.
Centre-back Ashley Williams returns from a three-match ban for this game, while Idrissa Gana Gueye is rated as 50/50 after a thigh injury. Record signing Gylfi Sigurdsson remains on the sidelines, along with James McCarthy, Mason Holgate and Eliaquim Mangala.
Jurgen Klopp admitted in midweek that he’ll rotate his squad ahead of next week’s Champions League second leg against Manchester City. One enforced change is likely to be Mohamed Salah, who went off on Wednesday with what looked like a groin problem, while Joel Matip and Adam Lallana are among the other absentees.
Everton v Liverpool Preview and Predictions
Liverpool were exceptional against City in midweek, and if they put in the same kind of performance against Everton they stand a great chance of extending their long unbeaten run against their local rivals. However, those tough 90 minutes will have taken their toll, and the Toffees could benefit from an early kick-off on Saturday.
Everton were dispatched 3-1 by City in their last Premier League outing, which followed back-to-back wins against Brighton and Stoke. Allardyce’s side has got themselves into contention for the European places in recent weeks, but they’re now six points behind seventh-placed Burnley having played a more.
The Toffees are 10/3 to record a long-awaited win over Liverpool on Saturday, who are priced at 19/20. Klopp raged at the powers that be regarding the tough scheduling his team faces in this early kick-off, and it’ll be interesting to see the side he sends out at Goodison.
If the German boss rings the changes, the draw could become a more attractive prospect at odds of 14/5. With a 10-point gap to Chelsea in fifth - who do have a game in hand though - Liverpool have some wiggle room in the league as they look to secure a place in the semi-finals of the Champions League on Tuesday.
Firmino to score and Liverpool to win at 9/4
The Brazilian forward was subbed off after 70 minutes on Wednesday, so he could start this game after a little rest in midweek as he looks to add to his tally of 23 goals for the season.
Everton to win and both teams to score at 13/2
Or back the Toffees to end their drought against their rivals from across Stanley Park with a timely win. Liverpool will still be dangerous though and are likely to get on the scoresheet no matter the result.
