Everton v Manchester City Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
February 04, 2019
Goodison Park - Premier League
Everton host Manchester City at Goodison Park on Wednesday night, as Pep Guardiola’s side continue the defence of their Premier League crown. Liverpool aren’t in action in midweek following their draw at West Ham on Monday, so this is a chance for the Citizens to get some points on the board and apply some pressure to their title rivals.
City have won the last two meetings between the sides 3-1, including their encounter at the Etihad in December. Everton were unbeaten in four Premier League games against City before that. There were three draws in that run, as well as an impressive 4-0 win for the Toffees in January 2017.
Lucas Digne is back from suspension for this game, although Yerry Mina misses out through injury. That means Michael Keane and Kurt Zouma will get the chance to make amends for a poor performance at the weekend. Idrissa Gana Gueye could make a return to the side, following interest in his services during the January transfer window.
City skipper Vincent Kompany continues his spell on the sidelines, while back-up goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is a long-term absentee. Benjamin Mendy could be available after suffering a reaction in his knee when he returned from injury last month. Guardiola must decide whether to bring John Stones back into the team, or stick with Fernandinho at centre-back.
Everton v Manchester City Preview and Predictions
This fixture may throw up a slight conflict in the minds of Everton supporters. No fan would ever want their team to lose, but the silver lining of a defeat to Manchester City would pile the pressure back on their local rivals Liverpool.
City can go ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s side on goal difference with a win, following their slip at the London Stadium. The Blues responded from a disappointing defeat at Newcastle last week with an emphatic victory over Arsenal on Sunday, with Sergio Aguero helping himself to a hat-trick that puts him right back in the mix for the Golden Boot.
The visitors are the odds-on favourites in the betting, priced at 7/19. They’ve won eight of their nine games since the start of 2019, scoring 34 goals and conceding just four in the process. Everton meanwhile are 19/2, as they look for only their second win in seven home Premier League games.
The Toffees slumped to a disappointing 3-1 defeat against Wolves at Goodison Park on Saturday, their third defeat in four league games on home soil. That’s as many as they’d lost in their previous 23.
Considering their poor home form and the quality their opponents possess, a draw would be a good result for Everton and it’s priced at 24/5. It’s always difficult to imagine a City game ending goalless, and with that in mind, the score draw’s available at 6/1.
City to win and BTTS at 7/4
The Citizens are favourites for the win, but Everton have scored in 15 of their 16 home games in all competitions this season. Another 3-1 win for City is 21/2.
Aguero to score first at 7/2
The Argentine only took 24 seconds to break the deadlock against Newcastle, and 46 against Arsenal. His hat-trick on Sunday took him to within one of Alan Shearer’s Premier League record, which Aguero is 16/1 to equal here.
