FC Basel v Manchester United Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
November 20, 2017
St. Jakob Park - Champions League
Manchester United can seal top spot in their Champions League group with a point in Switzerland but second placed Basel face elimination. They are level on points with CSKA Moscow who face pointless Benfica.
Manchester United cruised to a comfortable 3-0 Old Trafford victory against Basel in September, Marouane Fellaini getting the first goal, which was added to by Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford.
United did suffer a costly defeat at Basel in 2011 which saw them fail to progress from the group stage for only the third time in a run of 17 years so they will be on their guard not to get rolled over again.
Basel have Taulant Xhaka suspended but are feeling good about themselves after a 5-1 home win over Sion on Saturday when they came from a goal down at half time. Michael Lang got their first goal with Kevin Bua bagging the last two.
Having returned after long term injury in the weekend walloping of Newcastle, Zlatan Ibrahimovic might get a first start in which case get your money on the Swede who can’t stay out of the headlines, getting the first goal.
Paul Pogba also returned at the weekend as a started and Jose Mourinho might decide to have him on the bench in case he is needed but not risk asking him to do too much too soon by starting with him.
As United’s injuries begin to clear up they could have Marcos Rojo available for the first time since April but they are without Eric Bailly, although Phil Jones could make a surprise return.
Basel v Manchester United Preview and Predictions
Basel are 41/13 to win the game with Manchester United offered at a price of 1/1. The odds on a draw are rated at 34/13.
Basel and Manchester United will play on a new surface as the pitch sustained so much damage in last week’s World Cup qualifying play-off between Switzerland and Northern Ireland.
Coming in a run of four games in 10 days Mourinho may well juggle his resources by giving games to a fringe player or two. Pragmatic as ever, the United tactician will only be bothered about the result and getting the point he needs.
Basel are no pushover but are unlikely to be strong enough to beat Manchester United. They beat Benfica 5-0 at home but lost 1-2 on their own patch to CSKA who that had won well against in Moscow.
United’s attacking riches could see the inclusion of Anthony Martial and Rasford test Basel’s ability to handle pace, but with Mourinho on record regarding the difficulty the pair have playing together the manager may use this game to try and develop their on-field understanding so they don’t make the same runs. However United approach the game Basel are in for a tough night.
Romelu Lukaku to score first at 7/2
The Belgian broke his goal drought on Saturday and Mourinho is likely to give him the chance to get back into top form with a start against Basel who he scored against in September.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic to score first at 15/4
Back with an acrobatic volley that almost brought a goal on his return last Saturday, Zlatan will want to waste no time in seeing himself back in the headlines.
