Huddersfield v Cardiff Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
August 21, 2018
Kirklees Stadium – Premier League
Two potential relegation candidates face off on Saturday afternoon, as Huddersfield play host to Cardiff in the Premier League. The Terries currently sit bottom of the table with two games played, whilst Cardiff fare one point better, although have yet to score a goal.
It wasn't long ago that these two sides were plying their trade in the Championship, with Cardiff coming out on top in this fixture in May 2017. Admittedly, Huddersfield still managed promotion that season, but the 3-0 defeat still came as a shock to the Terriers, after Kenneth Zahore opened the scoring early, before a Joe Bennet double.
David Wagner made a host of changes for his side's heavy loss to Manchester City, and it will be interesting to see how he sets his team out. Having fielded both two different formations already this season, the manager will have to decide whether to stick with record signing Terrence Kongolo, and whether or not to start fellow-new-boy Adama Diakhaby.
Neil Warnock also faces indecision regarding formation, his iteration of a 4-3-3 helped Cardiff earn a draw against Newcastle last weekend, but saw his side garner just one shot on target, whilst his 4-5-1 fared worse against Bournemouth. Neil Everage is likely the only player to have earned a guaranteed start with the 'keeper stopping a penalty against the Cherries and making six saves versus Newcastle.
Huddersfield v Cardiff Preview and Predictions
Huddersfield have suffered a nightmare start to the season, with a uncontested first day defeat by Chelsea followed up by a 6-1 thrashing from Manchester City. However, despite being bottom of the table, Wagner will unlikely be too concerned, as his side were unlikely to take a result from either of their opening games. In reality, the Terriers' season starts this weekend.
Cardiff look a reasonable target for the Yorkshire club to get their first points, with the Bluebirds yet to score a goal. At the end of last season, a number of Championship pundits remarked that Warnock would have to significantly strengthen in order to complete at a higher level, and, on the evidence of the last two games, the Welsh club have failed to do so.
Spending less than half as much on transfers as Wolves and a quarter as much as Fulham, Cardiff brought in just one Premier League player, with the others coming from the Championship or abroad. This has had a telling effect on the club, who, having played two games against similarly funded sides, have won just one point. Against Huddersfield, Warnock will have to decide whether to push for a win, or hope to keep out their opposition for a second consecutive draw.
This is not the case for Silva, who without a question needs to win on Saturday. Having spent a record amount over the summer, the club has put their faith in the manager that avoided relegation for the club last season through resolute defensive performances. Even so, Huddersfield struggled last season to transition from a defensive to attacking set-ups against smaller sides, failing to beat both Swansea and Stoke at home and away.
Against Cardiff this weekend, the Terriers are likely to face a similar problem, and have shown no sign against either Chelsea or City that they pose much threat going forward. Silva will be hoping that new signing from Monaco, Adama Diakhaby, with the young Frenchman able to play anyway along the front line. Whether or not Silva is able to create an offensive force will be decisive in Huddersfield's chances of success on Saturday.
Steve Mounie to score first at 4/1
The forward has had little to do in Huddersfield's first two games and with enjoy the freedom to attack.
Under 2.5 goals scored at 1/2
Cardiff will set up to defend and Huddersfield aren't used to being the favourites.
