Huddersfield v Southampton Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
August 22, 2017
John Smith’s Stadium - Premier League
Huddersfield Town have been in dreamland at the start of the new Premier League season, winning both of their games so far. After their action-packed win over West Ham at the weekend, Southampton are the visitors to West Yorkshire as the Terriers try to make it three in a row.
Home form’s been crucial in the recent history of this fixture. It’s been a home win in each of the last four games between Huddersfield and Southampton. All of these meetings were in League One though, and a lot’s changed for both teams since those days.
Huddersfield boss David Wagner will be without Martin Cranie, Jonathan Hogg, Nakhi Wells and Jon Stankovic for Saturday’s game at the John Smith’s Stadium. After injuring his ankle in pre season, central midfielder Hogg is the closest to a return.
There could be divine help looking after Southampton, as Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino has a full complement of players to choose from. The new Gabon international Mario Lemina received a gruesome gash on his leg after a challenge with Mark Noble last weekend, but he’s not expected to miss out.
Huddersfield v Southampton Preview and Predictions
It’s still early days of course, but there’s plenty riding on this Premier League fixture. Huddersfield are looking to keep the feel good factor going, while Southampton can build on their gritty late win over West Ham which showed plenty of character.
After only securing promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play offs, Huddersfield were hot favourites for relegation. They’ve proven all their critics wrong so far, and a third consecutive win would be some story. The bookmakers think that’s a step too far for the Terriers though, who start this one as 14/5 underdogs.
There wasn’t a whole lot of optimism around Southampton at the start of the season either, and they could still be dealt a major blow if Virgil van Dijk leaves. Pellegrino has been boosted by the return of Charlie Austin though, who provides a very different option to Manolo Gabbiadini up front. The pair could make for an exciting partnership, which may lead to goals on Saturday.
The Saints make the trip up to West Yorkshire as favourites in the betting. You can back them at 6/5, while the draw’s available at 12/5. A both teams to score bet’s priced at 22/23.
Huddersfield to win and both teams to score at 7/1
You can more than double your odds on a home win with this bet. Back the Terriers to make it a hat-trick of Premier League wins, but not without Gabbiadini, Austin and co. having their say.
Mooy to score in 1-0 Huddersfield win at 66/1
He doesn’t score many, but this is still a great price for Aaron Mooy to repeat his match winning heroics. After his late penalty last time out, Austin’s available at 25/1 to score the only goal of the game.
