Japan v Senegal Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
June 20, 2018
Ekaterinburg Arena - World Cup Group H
Japan and Senegal meet on Sunday in possibly the most open group at the World Cup, with a great chance of reaching the knockouts. Both countries won their opening fixtures against Colombia and Poland respectively, leaving them in great shape ahead of this one.
These two countries have played each other three times over the years, with Japan yet to beat their African opponents. Senegal have won two of those meetings, including the most recent one by a 1-0 scoreline in a friendly back in 2003.
Japan didn’t pick up any injuries in their opener on Tuesday, so head coach Akira Nishino could name an unchanged line-up for this crucial game. However, he may decide to bring Shinji Okazaki into the starting XI, after the Leicester City striker only got five minutes against Colombia.
Alfred N’Diaye went off limping in the latter stages of Senegal’s victory over Poland, but the midfielder is expected to be fit for this game. Aliou Cisse will be wary of making too many changes to a team that performed very well against their European opponents on Tuesday.
Japan v Senegal Preview and Predictions
After both sides won their opening fixtures, this game is a huge one for Japan and Senegal as they look to take real control of Group H. A win for either side would go a long way to securing a place in the knockout rounds at this summer’s World Cup.
Japan’s victory over group favourites Colombia was very much aided by Carlos Sanchez’s early sending off. As well as stripping the South Americans of a talented player and costing them a penalty that was subsequently scored, Juan Cuadrado was also sacrificed for defender Wilmar Barrios.
That meant Japan had a much easier task, and despite conceding an equaliser, they eventually made their advantage count in the latter stages. Japan are the underdogs for this one against a Sadio Mane-led Senegal though, priced at 11/4 in the betting.
The Lions of Teranga meanwhile are priced at 13/10, as they look to build on a strong outing in their first game. Colombia will be tough for Senegal in their final group match, so they could do with getting the points on the board here. If you think they will add just the single point to their tally, the draw is available at 23/10.
Both teams to score at 11/10
Neither of these sides looked too great at the back on Tuesday, and both teams will be going for it in this one.
One-goal winning margin at 5/4
This game’s likely to be a tight affair. Senegal are 14/5 to win by one goal, while Japan are 4/1 for the same bet.
