Juventus v Tottenham Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
February 12, 2018
Juventus Stadium - Champions League
Tottenham travel to the home of perennial Italian champions, Juventus, kicking off the Champions League round of 16 fixtures. The sides are relatively even matched and both are able to grind out results, a moment of magic from one of the sides' superstars may make a difference in this one.
The two sides have not clashed often in competitive football, with their most recent game, a club friendly, taking place last summer. Tottenham emerged winners on the day, thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen, in a match that saw Juventus make 10 substitutions!
Max Allegri's side is without a number of senior players, with Blaise Matuidi adding to the lengthy injury list last weekend. Benedikt Howedes has barely played for the side since joining over the summer, with fellow centre-back Andrea Barzagli also likely to miss the game.
Having switched to a 4-3-3 this season, Allegri now finds himself without either Juan Cuadrado or Douglas Costa, meaning that he may have to look to make some changes. With Paulo Dybala in a race against time to return to fitness himself, a lot is in the air for the Italian tactician going into Tuesday's game.
Mauricio Pochettino has no such worries, with a rare clean bill of health for his side. Danny Rose made his long awaited return recently, whilst Toby Alderweireld is fully fit, but lacking in game time.
Juventus v Tottenham Previews and Predictions
Having dominated Italian football for the past six years, Juventus are facing the rare prospect of a second placed finish this season, and are trailing Napoli by a point. In this time, the Old Lady has finished as runners-up in the Champions League twice, and were they to achieve European success this season, their fans would surely forgive their domestic form.
Likewise, Tottenham's domestic form has been underwhelming this season, however, they have thrived in the Champions League. They finished top of their group, beating the likes of Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, and will be looking forward to getting back to the prestigious competition.
This game could well be billed as the battle of the strikers. Gonzalo Higuain has been at the top of Europe's goalscoring charts for the last five years, whilst Harry Kane is the Premier Leagues top scorer and could make the case for being Europe's most in-form forward.
Interestingly, the two forwards are hard to compare, as their roles within their respective sides are very different. Allegri has set Juventus up with the primary intention of assisting Higuain, whereas Kane has a far more active role in Tottenham's build up play. In Turin, the England man will be tasked with carrying Spurs' attacking threat, with his midfield occupied with breaking up play, meaning that Higuain may well emerge from this particular encounter as the victor.
Higuain is 11/10 to score anytime whilst Kane is 8/5 for the same bet.
At the Juventus stadium, the home side rarely looses, but it Pochettino can earn his side a draw, they may well have a good chance back in London.
Higuain to score last at 10/3
With few options on the bench, the Argentinian should well last the full 90 minutes, and thrives against tired defensive legs.
Under 2.5 goals scored at 5/4
Pochettino will be content with a draw, and his hard pressing side should be a surprise to a Juventus team that is used to the slower pace of Italian football.
