Liverpool v Everton Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
December 08, 2017
Anfield – Premier League
The first of this season’s Merseyside derbies takes place on Sunday, with a free-scoring Liverpool taking on a struggling Everton side. New Blues manager Sam Allardyce has a tough task ahead of his for what will be only his third game in charge.
Everton won’t find any solace in the two sides’ previous meetings, not having defeated their rivals since 2010, and losing the last three in row, to a goal deficit of 7-1. The most recent encounter ended 3-1 in Liverpool’s favour with goals from Philip Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Divok Origi.
Both teams have a number of injuries to deal with for the upcoming game. Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Bogdan and Danny Ward remain long-term absentees, whilst Joel Matip is unlikely to return in time to feature on Sunday. After being forced off mid-week against Spartak Moscow, Alberto Moreno is a doubt at left back.
Likewise, Everton have a number of players that have been out for a long time, although Yannick Bolasie, Seamus Coleman and Ross Barkly are all expected to be back by the New Year. Ramiro Funes Mori has a while longer to wait, whilst recovering from a knee operation.
Liverpool V Everton Preview and Predictions
The importance of this match, especially from an Everton perspective, is not to be underestimated, with Allardyce deciding not to attend his club’s Europa League match in order to prepare for the derby.
Liverpool, coming off a 7-0 win in their midweek Champions League fixture, are sitting in fourth place in the Premier League, just three points below Chelsea in third. With his club unbeaten in six games, Jurgen Klopp will be enjoying his side’s strong run of form and will expect nothing less than a win at the weekend.
Summer signing Mohammed Salah, who is 3/1 as first goalscorer, has linked well with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, and is top scorer in the league at the moment. Likewise, Philip Countinho has been in exceptional form, scoring a hat trick midweek.
Everton, on the other hand, have suffered a miserable start to their Premier League campaign, and are six places below their opponents in the table, despite spending far more over the summer. However, since the appointment of Allardyce, the Toffees have won each of their three matches, and will look forward to the returns of Coleman and Bolasie.
Allardyce is a master at shutting up shop, and will try to give his side as good a chance as possible against a rampant Liverpool side who are 1/3 win. However, Everton’s problem this season has been scoring goals, Oumar Niasse is considered their most likely player to score at 3/1, which does not bode well for the weekend.
Sadio Mane to score anytime at 5/4
The Senegalese forward has scored in his last two matches against Everton, and he’ll have the beating of Michael Keane for pace.
Liverpool to win 2-0 at 6/1
Liverpool are in great goal-scoring form, but Everton will likely set up to frustrate their opponents and go for a draw.
