Liverpool v Manchester United Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
October 10, 2017
Anfield - Premier League
There’s a barnstorming one in store for Saturday lunchtime, as Liverpool host Manchester United at Anfield in the Premier League. Two strong attacking teams will come up against each other, although different styles are likely to be on show.
Both of last season’s Premier League games between these two ended in draws, including a 0-0 stalemate at Anfield. This was the first goalless draw in 30 meetings between the fierce rivals. Prior to last season, United beat Liverpool four times in a row, winning 1-0 and 2-1 on Merseyside.
Sadio Mane will start for the hosts after returning from suspension against Newcastle last time out. Roberto Firmino was left out of the St James’ Park clash, but the Brazilian’s expected to return for this one. Playmaker Adam Lallana remains several weeks from full fitness, while Nathaniel Clyne continues to recover from his back problem.
The injury blows keep coming for Jose Mourinho, after Marouane Fellaini strained his knee ligaments on international duty. The Belgian joins fellow midfielder Paul Pogba on the sidelines, who still has no timetable for a return. Ander Herrera will get the nod alongside Nemanja Matic in United’s engine room, as the Spaniard continues to repair his relationship with his manager.
Liverpool v Manchester United Preview and Predictions
After a superb start to the season, this is the first real test for Manchester United. Separated from Manchester City at the top of the table by a single goal, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool will be stern opposition that may well burst the visitors’ early season bubble.
After celebrating two years in charge at Anfield, Klopp can boast a superb record against the rest of the top six. He’s only lost twice against the likes of United, City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal, which bodes well for this one if his defence steers clear of the cheap goals they’re prone to conceding. And with Mane and Philippe Coutinho due to start their first Premier League game at Anfield together this season, the Reds boss finally has his two most creative attacking forces fit and available.
As it’s turned out, Mourinho’s men have played five of the current bottom six in their opening seven games. They haven’t played anyone higher than 12th placed Southampton, so this is a genuine acid test for a team that’s fired in 21 goals and conceded just two so far. There’ll be a lot of scrutiny on Romelu Lukaku, as the striker needs to prove that he can do the job for United in the big games. Don’t be surprised to see Mourinho keeping things tight as the Red Devils look to counter.
The two teams are almost inseparable with the bookmakers, with Liverpool priced at 8/5 and United at 2/1. If you think the game will end in a draw, that’s available at 5/2.
One goal winning margin at 11/8
This bet has paid out 27 times in the Premier League era when the teams have met. With so much attacking talent on show, back it up with a both teams to score bet at 7/10.
Manchester United to win from behind at 23/2
With United’s strength on the bench, the visitors could still pull off the win even if they fall behind.
