Liverpool v Norwich City Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
August 05, 2019
Anfield - Premier League
Last season’s runners-up kick off the new Premier League campaign, as Liverpool entertain newly-promoted Norwich City at Anfield on Friday night. It’s a daunting task for the Canaries on their return to the top flight, with the Reds the heavy favourites to get their season up and running with three points.
The Reds are unbeaten in their last 12 matches against Norwich, winning 10, with these teams sharing a nine-goal thriller the last time they met in January 2016. Norwich went 3-1 up after Liverpool had taken an early lead, before the Reds came back to lead 4-3. Sebastien Bassong’s 92nd-minute goal looked to have won the Canaries a point, but Adam Lallana stole it for Liverpool in the fifth minute of added time.
Sadio Mane may not be risked from the start, with the Liverpool forward only returning from his post-Africa Cup of Nations break on Monday. James Milner should be okay after a minor muscle problem, but Nathaniel Clyne is going to be out for the long term after sustaining a knee injury in pre-season.
Canaries boss Daniel Farke expects to have Swiss defender Timm Klose available for this curtain-raiser, which will be crucial as another key defender, Christoph Zimmermann, has been ruled out with a knee injury. Louis Thompson and Alexander Tettey are both out too.
Liverpool v Norwich City Preview and Predictions
What a way to return to the big time. Norwich may have amassed 94 points on their way to winning the Championship last season, but they’re up against it from the get-go against a Liverpool side who can lay claim to being the best Premier League team not to win the title.
Jurgen Klopp’s Reds had to console themselves with winning the Champions League instead, although they were off the pace against Manchester City in the Community Shield at the weekend. They improved in the second half, but Liverpool need to get up to speed right from the start of the season, otherwise City will disappear into the distance.
Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino are still working their way towards full fitness after their summer exertions, while Mane can’t return to the fold soon enough. Norwich meanwhile were lauded for their impressive style of play last term, as they secured automatic promotion by a massive 11 points over Leeds.
The Canaries haven’t exactly splashed the cash throughout the summer though, which could mean they’re in for a tough season. They’re certainly expected to be in for a tough night at Anfield on Friday, with Liverpool the heavy 2/13 favourites for the win. Norwich are 22/1, while the draw’s available at 8/1.
Liverpool to win to nil at 8/11
The Reds had the best defence in the league last season, only conceding 22 goals, and the home fans will expect to kick the new campaign off with a comfortable win.
Mohamed Salah to score first at 3/1
The Egyptian struck the post on more than one occasion against City at the weekend, and he’s set to be a major threat to the visitors on Friday night.
