Lyon v Everton Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview
October 30, 2017
Stade de Gerland - Europa League
Lyon host struggling Everton on Thursday night, with a defeat for the Toffees spelling the end of their Europa League journey for 2017-18.
Lyon were the vicotrs when these two face off two weeks ago, securing a 2-1 win at Goodison Park in a controversial clash as the reign of Ronald Koeman drew to a close on Merseyside.
The only other recent meeting between Everton and French opposition came in the 2014-15 Europa League, winning 3-0 against Lille at Goodison Park, before drawing 0-0 in France.
Everton will be without central defender Michael Keane for the trip to France, after the former Burnley man missed their weekend defeat to Leicester City with an infected cut, and that is not set to be healed in time.
Midfielder James McCarthy is out with a hamstring injury, and Ross Barkley is still two weeks away from a return of a hamstring injury of his own. Yannick Bolasie, Ramiro Funes Mori and Seamus Coleman remain as long term doubts for the Toffees.
Lyon welcome back Brazilian striker Mariano from injury, after the former Real Madrid man missed the game at Goodison Park two weeks ago and he is likely to slot in alongside Nabil Fekir and former Manchester United player Memphis Depay in attack.
Lyon v Everton Preview and Predictions
Interim Everton manager David Unsworth faces a huge task after just two games into his new role, as he looks to save their Europa League campaign and improve his chances of getting the job on a permanent basis.
He has not got off to the best start with successive defeats to Chelsea and Leicester City, but the Lyon game represents an opportunity to perform under less pressure, with Everton's European fate potentially already sealed due to earlier results.
Unsworth is likely to pick an attacking line up to cause problems for Lyon, but given the Blues recent defensive issues this could be a dangerous tactic. Either way there is likely to be goals in this game and an over 2.5 goals bet is priced at 4/6.
Everton need a result in this game if they are to have any chance of reviving their season, and that alone could secure them something - with a draw priced at 16/5.
A 2-2 draw at 14/1
Everton find themselves in last chance saloon heading into this game on Thursday, an instance that Unsworth needs to play to his advantage in France. Defensively his side are struggling badly, conceding in all of their last eight games in all competitions, but they do still carry a goal threat. Five goals in their last five games is not a bad return for a team struggling for confidence,
Wayne Rooney to score anytime at 11/4
Despite Everton's poor form this season, Rooney has remained as their primary goal threat, scoring five goals in 15 starts in the Premier and Europa League. His experience and big game nous will be vital for Everton if they are to get anything out of this game against a high flying Lyon side.
