Manchester City v Arsenal Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
January 31, 2019
Etihad Stadium - Premier League
After suffering a shock defeat at Newcastle in midweek, Manchester City are back at home on Sunday with Arsenal the visitors to the Etihad. The Gunners beat Cardiff on Tuesday night to move level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea, but do they have enough to pick up a win this weekend?
Recent history would suggest not. City have won the last four matches between the teams, and are unbeaten in their last six Premier League meetings with the Gunners. The Blues hammered Arsenal 6-3 at the Etihad five years ago, and another high-scoring encounter wouldn’t be a huge surprise.
Ederson is a slight doubt for this game after appearing to injure his knee on Tuesday. Pep Guardiola needs his No.1 goalkeeper, as back-up Claudio Bravo is a long-term absentee after rupturing his Achilles tendon. Vincent Kompany misses out through injury, while Benjamin Mendy will also be given time after he had a reaction in his knee on his recent comeback.
Arsenal also have problems in defensive positions ahead of this game. Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Laurent Koscielny were both injured in their recent FA Cup defeat to Manchester United, while Hector Bellerin and Rob Holding have long-term knee injuries. Ainsley Maitland-Niles is also a doubt. Henrikh Mkhitaryan is nearing a return to action at the other end of the pitch.
Manchester City v Arsenal Preview and Predictions
The Premier League never fails to throw up surprises. A goal to the good after just 25 seconds against a team hovering above the relegation zone. City were expected to go on and beat Newcastle comfortably, closing the gap to title rivals Liverpool to a single point.
It didn’t quite work out that way, as the Blues went on to lose 2-1, after putting in a lacklustre performance where they seemed happy to sit on their one-goal lead. The dangers of that were exposed, and it must be assumed Guardiola put the proverbial rocket up his players following the game.
We should see a reaction this weekend, and we could be in for a cracking game if so. Arsenal have the capability to play excellent attacking football, but they’re also prone to caving under pressure. Just look at their 3-1 defeat at home to United in the cup, and the 5-1 demolition job Liverpool did on them, despite the Gunners taking the lead.
Arsenal put in a superb performance against Chelsea the weekend before last, but that was at home. City are strong favourites in the betting for this game, priced at 1/3. The visitors are 43/5, while the draw’s available at 5/1.
City to win and over 3.5 goals at 27/20
City can go big against any team, and they’ve reigned supreme over Arsenal in recent meetings between the clubs.
Sergio Aguero to score first at 7/2
The Argentinian striker scored the fastest Premier League goal of the season on Tuesday and is the favourite to break the deadlock for the second time in a matter of days.
