Manchester City v Burnley Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
October 17, 2017
Ethiad Stadium - Premier League
Free-scoring Manchester City have won every game except a home draw with Everton, although Burnley have shown some impressive form on the road. The Clarets won at Chelsea and are unbeaten away despite also visiting Tottenham and Liverpool.
City have 10 more wins than Burnley’s 28 in the history of this fixture. Last season the Blues won both games 2-1. In their previous meetings in 2014-15, Burnley took four points from a 1-0 home win and 2-2 away draw. The meetings before that in 2009-10 brought a 6-1 win for City at Turf Moor but they again shared the points at the Etihad, also sharing six goals.
Goalkeeper Tom Heaton’s dislocated shoulder continues to rule out the Clarets' number one. Sean Dyche’s squad are also missing Dean Marney and Jon Walters, neither of whom are expected to be close to a return.
As always seems to be the case, City are without Vincent Kompany due to a strained calf muscle. Benjamin Mendy’s ACL knee injury meanwhile rules him out until the final few weeks of the season. Sergio Aguero could feature after quickly recovering from a broken rib.
Manchester City v Burnley Preview and Predictions
Manchester City are hot favourites at 1/9 for the win, with Burnley at 28/1 despite already winning at Chelsea. The draw's priced at 12/1.
The way City are playing you'd be tempted to back them if they were playing Barcelona, never mind Burnley. Pep Guardiola described last week’s 7-2 win over Stoke as City’s best performance under him and they have scored 17 goals in their last three home Premier League games. All the sensible thinking points to betting on City, but you’ll need to be creative with your bets as they're such strong favourites.
No one will need to tell Burnley that they aren’t as good a team as City with the ball at their feet. Without the ball however the Clarets are as good as anyone, and they're unlikely to succumb to the sort of goal fest City have been producing regularly. The chances are that Burnley will lose but given they have won at Chelsea and Everton as well as in a local cup derby at Blackburn - and drawn at Liverpool and Spurs while remaining unbeaten away - they're worth a couple of quid odds of 28/1.
Crystal Palace’s win over Chelsea last weekend shows that even in the mega-bucks world of the Premier League’s big boys, football can always spring a surprise. With City having played a tough games against Napoli in the Champions League on Tuesday, there could be a chance for Burnley to record a stunning upset.
Burnley to win at 28/1
Unlikely admittedly, but at these odds surely worth a cheeky bet for a side unbeaten away from home and with a win at Chelsea, and only one defeat in their last three trips to City.
City to win 4-1 at 14/1
A more realistic bet than Burnley winning. Free-scoring City may go big again but it would be a surprise to see Burnley concede as many as recent visitors.
