Manchester City v Cardiff Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
April 01, 2019
Etihad Stadium - Premier League
After feeling like they were robbed of a massive win against Chelsea at the weekend, Cardiff face a daunting trip to the Etihad where they play Manchester City on Wednesday. The title-chasing Blues will return to the top of the Premier League table with a victory in this game.
City thrashed Cardiff 5-0 in South Wales earlier this season, which was the first league meeting between the clubs since each team won their home game during the 2013/14 season. City did knock Cardiff out of the FA Cup last season though, winning 2-0 away from home.
Vincent Kompany could be in line for a return from injury, although the Blues captain won’t be rushed back ahead of what promises to be a busy run-in. The same goes for Benjamin Mendy, while Sergio Aguero is also a doubt. Fabian Delph and Claudio Bravo have been ruled out.
Cardiff’s difficult assignment isn’t helped by the absence of their talismanic centre-back Sol Bamba. He’s out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, while Callum Paterson will also miss the remainder of the campaign following an operation on Monday. Matthew Connolly is also out, while Jazz Richards is doubtful.
Manchester City v Cardiff Preview and Predictions
The blues of Manchester face the blues of Cardiff in this midweek fixture, which looks as close to a home banker as you can get. The bookmakers certainly see it that way. Cardiff have shown plenty of character in their battle to stave off relegation, but City are still challenging on all four fronts and have history in their sights.
Tottenham almost did the Citizens a huge favour on Sunday in taking points off Liverpool, but Toby Alderweireld’s last-minute own goal saw Jurgen Klopp’s side move back into top spot. This is City’s game in hand, and anything other than a comfortable home win would be a major shock.
As well as battering Cardiff in their own backyard earlier this season, Pep Guardiola’s side have won 20 of their last 21 matches in all competitions, including the penalty shootout success against Chelsea in the League Cup final. It’s some record, but it means you won’t get any value on the defending champions in the outright market.
City are 1/12 for the win, while Cardiff are available at 40/1. The visitors could be worth a pound or two considering those odds and the way they nearly beat Chelsea on Sunday, but you’ll likely be throwing your money away. Even the draw at 15/1 looks like being one to steer well clear of.
City to win to nil at 8/11
This bet looks like a good way of getting the odds on a home win closer to evens, especially as Cardiff are scoring less than a goal a game on average this season.
City to win and over 4.5 goals at 7/5
The Citizens thrashed Cardiff 5-0 earlier this season, and they have the ability to hammer any team they come up against, particularly those struggling near the foot of the table.
